TV on DVD – Big Love, The Game, Portlandia, and The Tall Man

New this week - 'Big Love', 'The Game', 'Portlandia', 'MST3K', 'Sarah Jane', 'Simpsons', 'Tall Man', 'Captain Power', 'Designing Women', 'Alvin', 'Ben 10', 'Looney Tunes', 'Law & Order', 'Lucy', 'Going My Way', 'Skeleton Warriors', 'Elvira', 'Underbelly', 'Transformers', 'Spongebob', and 'Voltron'.

Balls! I totally forgot that we moved the DVD post to Friday. I’d love to have a great excuse about why this post is late. Opening of a fun new musical… Wild bear attack… I was just too damn drunk… But the truth of the matter is that Thursday night I was watching a rerun of The Saint, instead of doing the DVD post. So, here it is, about 22 hours late. Next week, I’ll do better.

Getting to the releases… It’s a pretty hefty list this week, headlined by sets from The Game, Big Love, Portlandia, and The Simpsons. All solid choices, but I’m going off the beaten path, and a little nutty, with my pick of the week. Based on nothing more than the actors listed on the Amazon page for the set, my pick of the week is The Tall Man. You might be thinking, “Dude… I have no idea what the hell that is.” Neither do I. But apparently  Clu Gulager, Denver Pyle, Leonard Nimoy, and Claude Akins were all in it. Who doesn’t want to get a look at that?

Transformers Prime, after a cheesy pilot, turned out to be quite the respectable series. Nice to hear Peter Cullen and Frank Welker as the leads once again, and some interesting lore that seemed to come from the Dreamwave comics or recent video games.

That’s good to know, Ryan. Thanks for the mini-review. I’ll put Transformers Prime on my list.

In the beginning, it looked like the human characters would take the focus away from the robots, as the movies did, but that never happens. The animation looks a little dodgy too at first, but I could swear it improved greatly as the season went on, leading to some very kick-ass fights. Genre-savvy guest stars like Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres, and John Noble give very entertaining performances, as did Jeffrey Combs week in and week out.

Two words. Zombie Decepticons.
