Cougar Town – A perfect combination of magic and science

'Cougar Town's' unique brand of humor is a perfect fit for my taste, which is why pretty much everything about this episode struck me funny tonight.

- Season 3, Episode 9 - "Money Becomes King"

“You know, I used to get magic and science mixed up … until I realized they were one and the same.” – Bobby

There are infinite reasons why I adore Cougar Town. It makes me laugh out loud, so far beyond the quotes (which were nearly impossible to write down tonight without writing down the entire script). Jules referencing getting her hand caught in the peanut jar … and then actually showing it happening a second time. Really? A second time? Lori’s life lessons. Jules laughing that Grayson could ever think Jules’ and Bobby’s child could go to medical school. I’m so glad they made Stan into a hellion of a toddler, because let’s face it — how cherubic do you think a kid raised under those circumstances (and with Ellie as a mom!) could be? Jules taking everyone to therapy as punishment.

I have to just shout-out to Nicole Sullivan, who is one of the most successful guest stars they’ve had on the show, as Jules’ shrink. Maybe it’s because she’s a Scrubs veteran, but she fits right in. Her monologue about her dead husband and his prostitute problem was hilarious and I hope we see her recur more often.

At the end of the day, though, it’s about the characters and how much they love each other. Lori and Jules, even as they are firing/quitting their business relationship, are just so happy to help one another move on. Grayson and Jules, not letting the house argument get them down. Bobby and Andy, who maybe love each other a little too much. Lori and Travis, always supporting one another. No matter what, these characters accept each other the way they are and forgive imperfections. It feels real to me … even the giant wine glasses. Yep, this show always gets it right — it’s the perfect combination of magic and science.
