So You Think You Can Dance – The top 20 are revealed

We get the much-anticipated news of who made it, who did not on 'So You Think You Can Dance.' Not too many surprises but, once we're in the thick of the competition, that will all change. Meanwhile: Who made it?

- Season 9, Episode 6 - "Top 20 Revealed"

Tonight on So You Think You Can Dance it was all about who got into The Top 20. Too many bodies to account for and zero in on at this point, but things will narrow down quickly as we get into the routines week to week.

Who made it? These lucky 20 guys and gals:

Alexa Anderson, George Lawrence Jr., Will Thomas, Amber Jackson, Nick Bloxsom-Carter, Witney Carson, Lindsay Arnold, the curly-haired, classically-trained Eliana Girard, Daniel Baker, Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, Tiffany Maher, Audrey Case, the surprising belly dancer Janelle Issis (who didn’t get the opportunity to perform this episode because of illness), Matthew Kazmierczak, Dareian Kujawa, Janaya French, one of my two favorites Amelia Lowe, Cole Horibe, Brandon Mitchell and my other favorite Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer.

No doubt too, too many to individually critique. But there were two performers I really wanted to see get through. One I didn’t have any doubt would make it, the other I wasn’t quite certain the judges would allow through: The pale, pale Amelia Lowe (who I really believe could step up to the point of taking this season) and the quirky Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer who fought every step of the way to make it into the Top 20. Specific congratulations to both these hopefuls.

So … no SYTYCD next week because of 4th of July week, but the show will return in all its glory the following week.

Notes:

  • The SYTYCD high water mark 200th show was not a place for an unscripted Zooey Deschanel to be given a gig. Ad libbing is one of the farthest things from her bag of tricks. She definitely needs a script. She was very uncomfortable to watch.
  • The music for the classical piece with Eliana, Daniel and Chehon was completely inappropriate for the routine.
  • The Top 10 Girls did a Travis Wall piece whose routines are usually outstanding showcases that put the dancers through their paces. (Side Note: The song accompanying the routine, Sennen’s “Where The Light Gets In,” was very reminiscent of a Cure tune.)
  • The Top 10 Guys did a Sonya Tayeh routine. In maternity pants. Her routines are oft times things of beauty to behold, but this one was a little too goofy for me.
  • Lastly, the entire Top 20 did a Mia Michaels number … which probably would have been terrific if you could have actually seen it. Poor, poor lighting during the performance.

Zooey was horrible. There could have been a highly effective drinking game with her use of “Oh My Gosh.”

I am so happy Cyrus made it. I was concerned there for a minute, because the other hip-hop guy was really good too. But does not have the personality that Cyrus. I’m still a little concerned because he did seem to to struggle in a lot of the pieces. I hope he gets more confident in his choreographed movements.

I am so glad Mia is back. This is also the first time that I am aware of being impressed with a Stacy Tucchi (sp?) piece. I missed the intro and thought Travis had done it.
