Big Brother – The first nominations of the season

Willie makes the first nominations of the season on 'Big Brother,' sending shockwaves through two teams. And just what the heck is going on with Ian?

- Season 14, Episode 2

Ian lurks around the "Big Brother" house

First thing’s first … I really like the newly re-orchestrated Big Brother theme song! I was never a fan from the time they changed it from the original theme (which, granted, was a little too “easy listening”), but I like the new riff on it.

That being said, I’ll just give a list of highlights from the episode since there hasn’t really been much drama yet, but does anything think it’s very interesting — and a little surprising — that no one seems to have really crossed team lines yet to form alliances? We saw Janelle and Britney team up tonight to combat Dan and Boogie, and that pairing seems to be going very successfully thus far. But I’m really surprised we haven’t yet seen any of the actual players from other teams try to form alliances. (Okay, we did, and that went spectacularly down in flames by the time nominations were announced.)

The one person who actually made out the best — and the worst — since Thursday’s episode was Ian. But what makes Ian tick? He spends his sleepless nights prowling around the house, seemingly oblivious to the fact that (a) it’s all being recorded, (b) the HOH room can see everything, and (C) it’s also being streamed live on the internet 24/7. So while he’s lounging under furniture, posing in front of mirrors (that have cameras behind them), and smacking his butt with kitchen utensils in the middle of the night … it’s all being broadcast for everyone to see. And it’s hilarious! But even when everyone is awake, he’s still creeping them out with his tippy-toeing and lurking, putting a huge target on his back (but, come on, you have to keep the weirdo till the end because no one will vote for him to win). But, Boogie’s win in the new Coaches Competition gave him safety for the week … and made him a Have Not as well! But at least he’s not going home this week. And other than Ian and Willie, I could barely tell you who any of the newbies are yet because the coaches have been the main focus of the game so far.

So what else happened on this episode? The usual wheeling and dealing, and at least one very surprising nomination for eviction. Here’s a quick rundown of what went on:

  • Dan evicted Jodi simply because his other two team members, Danielle and Kara, were already getting along well enough not to break them up.
  • Mike “Boogie” wants to align with Dan because he doesn’t think Janelle and Britney have any game. He’s also playing Dan to get himself to the end.
  • Janelle and Britney align their teams to fight Boogie and Dan.
  • Everyone learned that the winning coach of the HOH also got their own “room” in the HOH suite.
  • Willie spilled the beans about being a Hantz to Janelle and Britney, although it’s not clear yet if Dan and Boogie know.
  • Janelle has nicknamed Boogie and Dan the “New Chilltown.”
  • Willie made a deal with Frank to keep each other safe — the first cross-pollination of teams. When Boogie asks Frank how safe he feels on a scale of 1 to 10, Frank says a 1 because he’s made a connection with Willie. Boogie is impressed.
  • Coaches had to pick one of their own to be Have Nots for the week: Shane (Britney), Danielle (Dan), Ashley (Janelle), and Ian (Boogie).
  • Willie planned to put Ian on the block because he’s creeping everyone out, but Boogie screwed up that plan — and his own — by giving Ian safety.
  • Boogie said if he had to send any team member home, it would be Jenn … even though he said she’s playing a good social game. He thinks Frank is well-liked by everyone.
  • Chef Joe is cooking all the food in the house, and not keeping leftovers, unaware that they only get a certain amount of food per week. It’s also putting a huge target on his back. Britney said they’ll have to start eating tea bags.
  • Can someone please tell Joe to stop yelling while he’s in the Diary Room?! He’s got a mic, we can hear him just fine.
  • Willie nominated Frank and Kara, making Boogie’s jaw hit the floor … and opening his eyes to the fact that Janelle and Britney are running things from the HOH room (who ain’t got no game, Boogie?). Dan just looked dejected. Could he be two players down by Thursday’s episode?

I am keeping tabs on the live feeds, so I will post some spoilers now and then for those who want to know. The POV competition has been held and …

Shane won, which means the nominations should stay the same. It looks like Frank is going home simply because he’s too well-liked and therefore a total threat.

Freakin Willie. His original plan to team up with Frank to have a strong alliance outside the whole coaches’ teams thing was a smart plan. Sooner or later, these teams are going to eat each other. Better to have friends on the outside. And he went and screwed it all up. Well done Willie. Way to listen to two chicks that have never won the game. (Although, I had forgotten how hilarious Britney is.)

Even if Kara is Willie’s target (which I doubt), he could have come up with a better pawn. I’m betting Boogie will wreak some havoc in the days leading up to the vote to undermine Willie’s decision and save Frank. Or at very least, make sure no one in the house trusts him.

The coaches are an interesting twist, but not if all of the members do exactly what they are told.

Yeah, I don’t know why he didn’t just take Jenn instead of Frank, but the house fears that Frank is so well-liked already that it would be tough to beat him the further he gets. It certainly would have been smart to not screw up the first cross-team alliance you make. I expected Willie to tell Frank he was a pawn, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I’m actually happy that no one has come out playing too hard, too fast right from the start. Maybe everyone has learned that it is as much a social game as it is strategic.
