Wilfred – Messy existentialism

This was a jumble of an episode with very little to cheer about. But ... it did reveal a possible clue about Ryan's life.

- Season 2, Episode 5 - "Now"

“Be here now.” — Ram Dass

Nice concept. Interesting premise.

But what happened? What did you get out of this episode of Wilfred?

The story started out with Wilfred pulling a gun on Ryan in an effort to get him to think about life, think about the “now” he’s currently living. (I didn’t necessarily like this particular bit of monkey business. Wilfred is a tricky character prone to shenanigans, but this act seemed forced.) Ironically, back-alley thugs end up pulling guns on the pair and banditting Ryan’s wallet. What immediately follows is Wilfred, frightened out of his wits, loses his sense of smell as a result.

What takes place for the remainder of the episode is rather confusing: It was intriguing Wilfred became introspective about things, thinking deep thoughts and cooling his wiseacre jets for a change of pace, but he turned into a pretentious asshole of the extreme kind and really poured on the “Me! Me! Me!” attitude. It was off-putting. It didn’t play well. And it appeared as if the writers were attempting to go somewhere with it, but never reached any sort of climax with the storyline. They attempted to integrate Ram Dass’ concept of “Now” but failed at any cohesion throughout the half hour. It was a jumbled mess of an episode.

The only interesting moment I got out of the episode was the notation Wilfred (supposedly) “smelled” the tumor in Ryan. Did he really? Or is this just another one of his antics? It wasn’t explored beyond the brief mention and with Wilfred’s justifications. (Ryan’s bouts anxiety, blackouts and hallucinations were called into question.)

*hhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm* Stay tuned.

Notes:

  • If Ryan really does have a brain tumor, that could open up a whole new can of worms in the show and shed light on what is really happening with him, possibly even shedding light on why he sees Wilfred as he does.
  • The “OWBP” (Open Water Bowl Project). *snort*
  • Some of Wilfred’s descriptions of his prize-winning defecation were comical: “The form … the taper of the pinch point … “

Quotations:

“It’s easy not to worry when you don’t have any real problems.” — Ryan

“I’m trying to be responsible and plan for my future.”  — Ryan
“The hell with your future.” — Wilfred

“What are you doing in the dark?” — Ryan
“It’s only dark because the sun is such an attention whore.” — Wilfred
