Daily Show/Colbert Report – Week of October 20, 2008

Hey, kids! It’s time for a quick round-up of highlights from this week’s episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Can you feel the pressure building as November 4th draws nearer and nearer? I haven’t seen this much tension between audiences and TV since I last saw Videodrome. Points if you know what I’m talking about, double-points if you cringed while remembering James Wood’s new flesh fist gun and tripe-points if you noticed that I only wrote this because I like mentioning Videodrome as often as possible. Videodrome.

Jon Stewart’s outrage over the “real America” talk from the right was absolutely beautiful. No words I use could do his snarky fury justice. Just watch and enjoy.

Jason Jones filed a report form Sarah Palin’s ol’ Wasilla. They’ve been using Jones a lot lately. As I mentioned in last week’s round-up, Jason Jones and Samantha Bee have signed up to write and star in their own CBS sitcom. I wonder if it has anything to do with that deal. The eye has also grabbed Rob Riggle, apparently. Sounds like he has a series coming up and it might have a little something to do with his years as a marine. This leaves a significant void in the correspondent crew. Once again, I will send my resume and Sears Family Portrait headshots to the TDS studio, possibly with a five dollar bill stapled to my face (on the photo, not my real face).

Also, John Hodgman appeared on TDS to promote his newest book, More Information Than You Require. I sneaky-found it before its official release at New York’s Strand bookstore (AKA bookworm heaven) and have been enjoying it greatly. His use of Jon clips against Jon was absolutely fantastic, even though it was a bit sad that they had to go all the way back to the couch years to grab something. Hodgman’s probably going to be gone from TDS for a while because he’s going on tour to promote the hell out of this book. If you haven’t seen him live already, definitely try to. He’s a great story-teller (check out this TED Talk he did recently) and he’s often accompanied by the amazing Jonathan Coulton and David Rees.

It was another strong week for Mr. Stephen Colbert as well. For those of you that don’t know, he is releasing a DVD called A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All in November. From the looks of the promotional pictures, it’s going to be totally insane, complete with appearances by Jon Stewart, Feist, Willie Nelson, and Elvis Costello. Has your brain exploded in a fit of Christmas-y joy? Yeah. Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Notable clips from this week include this edition of “Threatdown” and this “Difference Makers” about Hummer owners.
