Daily Show/Colbert Report – O’Reilly’s panda love, Savage’s naughty words, Colbert’s secret identity

(Week of November 10, 2008)

Hey, kids! It’s time for a quick round-up of highlights from this week’s episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. The boys are still doing fine, despite the fact that with each day comes another reason to be a little less bitter about the state of the government. That is not to say there aren’t plenty of hot topics, because there totally are. Prop 8 and gay marriage seemed pretty popular this week, and, boy, did people have things to say.

The most notable interview on TDS was probably with Bill O’Reilly. How is the guy handling the election results? He says he’s all right, but I bet he’s crying inside. The conversation was rather civil, but, as usual, there was an underlying tension that would have been impossible to scrub out. It began to rear its head during the discussion about gay marriage. Ahh, three minutes before it ends, that’s when it gets really good. I must admit, I felt bad for O’Reilly when he called that polar bear a panda. He probably realized he called it the wrong thing as soon as the words came out of his mouth, but his brain immediately refused to admit he was wrong. Here’s the uncut interview:

If that tickles your fancy for some reason, Comedy Central Insider has made this impressive list of Mr. O’Reilly’s best moments on TDS. Watch it if you want, but please keep your hands out of your pants. That’s just creepy.

This Wyatt Cenac “Best Fucking News Team” promo was also pretty funny. It didn’t make much sense, but Rob Riggle’s painted on eyes and Jason Jones’s over-the-top clip made it pretty great. I didn’t need to see that much of John Oliver though. No one needs to see that much of John Oliver.

My favorite interview of the week had to be Stephen Colbert’s with Dan Savage, though. Maybe it was his strange giddiness or Savage’s amazing, sharp responses. Just see for yourself. In other news, why hasn’t someone made a movie about Eskimos fighting the handicapped?

The wrap-up of the “Fallback Position” report was not as filled with super-spy goodness as I thought it would be, but I still enjoyed it. This may or may not be because of Colbert in a tux.

Speaking of intense geekiness, have you heard that Colbert is shaking things up in the Marvel Universe? Of course you have.
