Daily Show/Colbert Report – TDS turns ten; Lewis Black breaks character for half a second

Colbert Plate(Week of January 12, 2008)

First of all, in case you haven’t heard, Barack Obama is going to be sworn in on Tuesday, and everybody in DC is gonna get totally wasted on hope and the champagne-filled reflection pool. It’s going to be the craziest Inauguration Day ever, and The Daily Show will cover the festivities live. Sort of. Tune in to a live on-location broadcast at the regular time Tuesday night. Unfortunately, Stephen won’t be joining in. I’m sure there will be some sort of bitter remark at some point during The Colbert Report.

Lewis Black filed another “Back in Black” report, the introduction for which was actually kind of adorable. As it turns out, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart turned ten this past week. Yeah. Ten. Feel old now, long-time viewers? Anyway, Lewis Black has been around as long as Jon has, so it was kind of nice to see them share that moment, albeit briefly, behind the desk. Mr. Black even broke character for, like, a split second after he shouted, “Don’t touch me!” You can’t deny the tension, LB.

My favorite guest of the week must have been friend of the show Fareed Zakaria; interviews with him are always wonderful. The end of this particular interview got a little weird though, because as Jon was marveling at the holes in traditional terrorists’ strategies, I couldn’t help but wonder if anyone apart from myself was feeling like this was a little If I Did It-esque. Glad Mr. Zakaria pointed it out. Also, that “72 raisins” part was pretty great.

For those looking for a bit more Hollywood, Daniel Craig was also there for an okay interview. Watch if you’re into mild hetero guy flirtation and/or James Bond.

TheDailyShow.com also has these marvelous compilations just in time for the official Bush-to-Obama transition. As long as you’re either a fan of Obama or Jon’s impression of Bush, you’re totally set.

Over on the Colbert Report, Stephen had a nice chat with Meet the Press‘s David Gregory and OBEY artist Shepard Fairey. Both were pretty straightforward interviews but interesting nonetheless.

My favorite part of the week was Stephen’s own line of collectible Obama memorabilia. That man knows class, all right. It was also good to see Tim Meadows again; it’s not like we have a long list of recurring characters on this show. Now if only he could bring Tad, his building manager back….

My favorite Farred Zakaria moment ever was on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher during the writers’ strike when he criticized Maher for his opening monologue – I mean opening remarks. It’s always nice when someone calls Maher out on his BS.

Anyway. Thanks Annie :-)
