Kyle XY – The White Rabbit swims tonight

kyle xy psychic friend

(Season 3, Episode 2 – “Psychic Friend” Kyle XY - Kyle XY, Season 3 - Psychic Friend)

Though not as ba-boom as the premiere, this was a pretty satisfying episode of Kyle XY. We got some light banter, some dark and psycho moments, and yeah, a little of the “ABC Afterschool Special” feel. But since I kind of like it when Kyle and Amanda fight, this was OK tonight.

I loved Jessi with the knives … man, this chick is dark and crazy and we need her as a foil to Kyle’s goody-two-shoes-ness. When it comes down to it, though, she really is just another teen in angst, and she’s trying to be the best person she can, especially as a friend for Kyle. She doesn’t want to let him down the way she feels everyone in her life has let her down.

So how do we feel about Mark dating Lori? Apparently Stephen isn’t so keen on it, and he doesn’t even know Mark is working for Latnok. On the one hand, he’s cute in a geeky sort of way (thought totally not my type so I can’t get into it but I get the concept) so it could be a fun storyline, and the danger, betrayal, bad guy element is all there too, so I say bring it on.

Even though Cassidy paid the psychic to say it, it does bring up the question: Do we buy this Kyle / Jessi soul mate thing? I definitely do if we are not talking in a romantic way, but unless Jessi fast-forwards through about seventeen years of therapy (which she could conceivably do since she’s got powers and all), Kyle is never going to be attracted to her in that way. They are undeniably connected due to the lack of belly button thing, and they do have a certain dependence on one another. But why did they introduce the soul mate aspect?

Then again, maybe it would be a welcome change, since Amanda is so whiny. Poor Kyle can’t do anything right. Um, Amanda, your boyfriend is a Super Hero; do you think you could be satisfied with something he does? She’s never been the most understanding girlfriend, and it is exhausting. I think Kyle and Declan make the best couple, truth be told. “I’ve learned from experience never to doubt you when you say you can do something,” Declan says to Kyle. That’s the kind of support we’re talking about, Amanda. Learn from Declan.

Other things worth mentioning:

  • I like that they highlight a real band; it reminds me of The Bronze from Buffy. Yeah, and The Peach Pit After Dark.
  • “Do you think I’m too innocent?” — Amanda
“Is this a trick question?” — Hillary
  • “The Girl Code” — Is this Kyle XY‘s answer to the Bro Code?
  • Andy didn’t want to be “a Juno in the making.”
  • Everyone should have Nicole and Stephen for parents; there’d be a lot less teenage angst in the world.
  • I did miss Super Kyle this week and can’t wait to see more of him.
  • “Do I need to give you a lecture on the perils of stalking?” — Declan to Kyle, who was being a little too overprotective of Amanda
  • I love that Kyle still sleeps in his bathtub, and goes there for comfort.

I’m so anxious to see where the rest of this season goes, and I’m disappointed that it will be only ten episodes. I can’t believe that darned writers’ strike is still affecting my TV!
