Happy Town – How does handsome Greggy fit in with these guys?

It's the last episode of 'Happy Town' for a little while, though it'll be back next month. For how long, who knows? At least for now, though, we've more we can talk about.

Well, for the other two of you who are still interested in this show, you may not have heard that its remaining ordered episodes won’t be airing until next month. To most people, that’s a pretty good sign that the show’s going to be canceled, even though the producers are trying desperately to squash those rumors via Twitter and elsewhere. I’m just going to ride it out and try not to expect or hope for anything.

Alright, so, this episode. I’ll really try to make this the last time I mention this, but I was bothered by the music choices again, though only for the one at the very beginning of the episode. What the hell is with that peppy, inappropriate music while Tommy and murderer Dave were digging holes looking for bodies? It was an upbeat song for an uncomfortable moment, and I just didn’t get it. Alright, I’m done harping on the music. Really.

It certainly appears that the agent working on the case is legit, since he really did have the tire pattern sent out to be molded. So what was with his assault on Georgia? It could simply be that he goes WAY out of his way to solve a case, and we’re just being led to think there’s something more going on. The thing is, did he learn anything from Georgia when he drugged her? Because she certainly looked to be well out of it during that sequence. What kind of a trained Fed doesn’t know how the effects of the drugs he used work?

I’m pretty sure most people are with me, in that Merritt Grieves is being made out to be a prime suspect for the Magic Man, though he won’t turn out to be. We did learn quite a bit about what the Magic Man likely looks like from Carl Bravin. He’s tall, skinny, wears a top hat and has a giant bird named Cicero. Then again, he could be full of shit and the mention of a bird is coincidental.

The most interesting and surprising moment of the show so far was the appearance of Greggy Stiviletto, all out in the open and out of jail. Since he’s not slinking around in the shadows, obviously he got out legally somehow. Again, though, we’re shown a guy who just doesn’t seem to look like someone who belongs hanging around with the moronic Stivilettos. First Tommy, now this guy. How did they ever think hanging out with these idiots was fun?

If this show does survive, I’d really like to see the Magic Man aspect be resolved at the end of this season, with a completely new mystery popping up next season (I know, who am I kidding?). There are enough characters in this show to drive many different stories off of, and when we find that Grieves isn’t part of the Magic Man fiasco, maybe we can learn something about his past. Or the ladies at the boarding house?

Really enjoyed the episode. I understand where you’re coming from with the music not really fitting the scene, but I think it’s deliberate to a certain extent.

Hopefully we’ll get answers of some kind before the show is cancelled. I like a good small town mystery, but it seems very few other people agree.

Agreed about the reveal of Greggy — wasn’t expecting that. Although I look forward to some back-story on the Stiviletto family — they seem pretty interesting.

Again, I’d have to agree that the music was deliberate, and quite enjoyed the cognitive dissonance.

I think the agent was from the State Police, not Federal.

I’m finally fully invested in this show just as it gets pulled for Sweeps. I had read that there were only seven episodes (although IMDb lists eight), so I don’t know just how much resolution we can expect come June. But more Sam Neill is always good.

is anyone not seeing the twin peaks aspects of this show? i desperately wish that this could take the place of my beloved lynch masterpiece, and frankly i really do think that it COULD. you are dead on in that the resolution of the magic man should be seen at the end of the first season (as was Bob in twin peaks) and perhaps a whole new layer for the second or third etc. but realistically, the episodes shot are it. this show will be cancelled for sure. tragic that america isn’t ready for it.

my vote is the statey for the magic man (though the “real” magic man could me more than one person (revolving around “henley”(?)) and i’d love to see the boarding house ladies come into play. i feel some witches of eastwick vibe from them and sam neil – which would rule.
