A&E’s The Glades scores par its first time out

Did you catch the pilot of 'The Glades' tonight? If so, has it caught your attention? If not, will you be giving it a shot? Like I say, if you're into 'Castle' and would be interested in more of that with a different setting, give it a go.

- Season 1, Episode 1 - "Pilot"

“That animal’s protected!” – Alligator expert
“Well then how come I had such a clear shot?” – Jim Longworth

When I watched the premiere of The Glades with Deb a couple of weeks ago, we both knew there was another show it reminded us of … somewhat. We couldn’t quite put our finger on it, but 30 minutes later, Deb had it: Castle. If you had one cop/crime-fighting, funny show from TV to compare The Glades to, it’s Castle. If you don’t already think that’s a good thing, then, probably, this show isn’t for you. That, and you’re from another planet.

Is the main character, Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore) an author or someone acting as a cop who’s not a cop? No. But he does share the same attitude and mannerisms of Richard Castle, his vice being the lush, green golf courses of Florida rather than the green felt of a poker table. His female counterpart, Callie Cargill (Kiele Sanchez) isn’t Kate Beckett, at least so far, but her quick introduction and injection into the story works well. Obviously it’s going to be some time before we see how well Jim and Callie’s relationship works, though I have high hopes.

What I especially liked about this episode was Jim’s interactions with Dr. Carlos Sanchez (Carlos Gomes) and, in this episode, the surprising ending with Mike Ogletree (John Carroll Lynch). When you have a show that nobody’s seen before, and you’re introduced to someone who appears to be a main character like Mike, the writers have the liberty of being able to surprise the hell out of the viewer with something like a character death or, in this case, a surprising villain. That’s where I worry that it’s quite possible we won’t get crime conclusions as good as this one again. Also, the golf is almost on par (no pun intended) with Castle’s author poker games. Almost.

I’m definitely interested in checking out more of what A&E has to offer with this show, and hopefully it’ll keep up the pace and not be afraid to introduce more humor into the mix. There’s a lot of potential here, and the writers need to not be afraid to take Jim Longworth’s humor up a notch more often.

Thanks for the early review. I didn’t know it was premiering and didn’t watch, but A&E is airing it again in two hours, so I don’t have to miss it. I’ll check back when I have had a time to view!

I’m glad I checked this site. You made the show sound like something I would like so I’ve set my VCR (yes, some of us still use those) to record it when it comes on again in an hour. They are also repeating it again on Monday night.

The show is okay. But compared to Castle it’s only a poor man’s Castle. Some potential though.

I watched last night and loved it. I’m officially in love with Matt Passmore. Great line delivery and he’s very believable as the somewhat cocky, but more amusing Jim Longsworth. And that man looks fabulous in a pair of jeans. Yes, that does matter. :-D

I was shocked that Kylie Sanchez could actually act and make me care about her character – after Lost, who would imagine?

I didn’t read you post prior to watching (which is amazing given the spoilerholic that I am) and I am so glad! I did not see the end coming. But looking back at the clues it made perfect sense.

The show had the best ratings of any premiere on A&E, so I think we can look forward to a lot more of The Glades, and for that I am glad. To top it off, my friend in Miami is going to hunt down Passmore and send him to me. What more could I ask? LOL

You are so right I agree with you did you see the shows from the beginning?

Yes! And I have them all on my DVR. Multiple viewings are in order. :-)

It was a fun and enjoyable show. Thanks for the review. Until I read it I had only heard a new show called “The Glades” was coming out. By the title alone I thought it was going to be some kind of soap-ish drama, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The weak link in this show is the title.

Every character is overly cocky, arrogant and irresponsible, including kids. Who needs to see junk like this on TV. Instead of having the main character tell us how great and perfect he is at his job, let it be obvious by his actions and abilities (it’s called acting the part). I won’t be watching this show.

“Glades” is terrific in concept, but could we see a little
more of the glades and a little less of the nurse/doctor???
What is she anyway, and why is she ever the only one in
the hospital and why does she have so much time off and
why is her voice so nasal and whiny?
And also could you tone down Jim’s condesending sneer?
He always seems to be smiling and not in a friendly way.
He’s just a little bit too arrogant.
So.. if you could just make the main character
less of a smart-aleck and get rid of the girlfriend
the show would be perfect. The little boy is a nice
touch though, can you keep him without his mother?
