Last Comic Standing – I was (gulp) wrong. OK? I said it!

If I was at the track, I just would have lost my shirt on my ponies for 'Last Comic Standing'. Unless I had played the trifecta. Or something.

Hmph! Lo these many weeks, I have been so sure! So sure that Tommy Johnagin had the title of Last Comic Standing wrapped up like a pretty lil’ Christmas package under my comedy tree. But noooooo! A dark horse, resembling a Puerto Rican John Belushi came out of nowhere and made me a putz. His name? Well … I can only say it like asshat host Craig Robinson. Feeelllllipaaaaay Esparrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrza!

Look, I’m not saying Felipe isn’t funny. He definitely is. It’s just that … dang! I was so certain about Tommy. I haven’t felt this disappointed since that guy I asked to the Sadie Hawkins dance in high school said no. He said his parents were taking him out of town to ski. And then I saw him at said dance when I went with a friend. With a hotsy totsy blonde. In a fur coat. I cried and smoked my first cigarette. (Cough cough!)

Oh Tommy Johnagin. Wha’ happen? I know that last night, in the finals, you had a weak set. But! Does that mean that America’s votes didn’t count? Cause you’re clearly funnier than Felipe.

I guess that’s neither here nor there. Bitter sorrow is not new to me. I am like the Erica Kane of TV comedy Disenchantment. And, in this case, I will tell you why.

Last Comic Standing has changed a lot this season. First of all, when they got down to the last five or so comedians, they used to have a Survivor-type vote-off betwixt the comics. And then a set showdown. It was much more interesting. In this finale, we had five comics getting voted off one by one, with “entertainment” in between. Some of it was good (Tom Papa and Kathy Griffin), some of it not. And by that I mean everything Craig Robinson.

We had to watch two … yes two tributes about him being the greatest host and blah blah. Then he has this band.  Yergh! This. Guy. Is. Not. Funny. Are the execs at NBC having too many vacations with beer BBQs this summer? What the Frak?

When the best clips they have to show about you include skits with bears and lame transitions, then I really don’t know what to say anymore. Except! That if NBC brings you back, dude, then I think you have a picture with an exec and a goat or something.

Final thoughts? Well, I have a couple. First, I want to tell you that I asked Facebook friends and former winners of Last Comic Standing Alonzo Bodden and John Heffron to give me their thoughts on the show. Here’s what they said:

Alonzo Bodden (winner season 3): “LCS was my introduction to America. The show was great for me. I wish ‘em luck this season, and if Craig is a true friend he’ll come up with a reason to mention my name.”

Oh well, Alonzo. He never mentioned you, so I’d take him off the ole holiday card list. But here’s the video I promised to pimp out for you in exchange for your comment!

And here’s yours, my fellow Detroiter John Heffron:

John Heffron (winner season 2): “I won Last Comic in 1973 but it seems like only yesterday. Winning the show was easy, it’s all the stuff after that was tough … That’s when comedy turned into a business for me.”

So, there you have it. I asked both John and Alonzo for dirt. John didn’t reply, but Alonzo did. He said that for 20 PayPal bucks he’d tell me John’s cheats for video games. I don’t play video games really. So that did me no good. But I thank them for their comments anyway. Maybe, just maybe, they will pimp out my article on Twitter. Or help me get the straw out of my teeth from having to eat my lovely hat about Mr. Johnagin….

1) I see someone has been watching Troma films.
2) Ain’t no “c” in “Frak”.
3) Tommy appeals to the thinking comedy fan, I think. Felipe appeals to people who pay a buck apiece to dial voting lines for TV shows. But most likely, like every previous winner of Last Comic Standing, both these guys will be forgotten within a few years. Sad truth.
4) Thank you for your write-ups.

1.) Troma? Huh?
2.) I like it better with a ‘c’.
3.) Yes, I *am* a thinking comedy fan.
4.) You’re more than welcome!
