It’s the final countdown of Medium episodes, so it’s time for people to start dying. This week, Joe’s mother returns along with her brain cancer to teach Allison that being a lying liar kills grandmas. Okay, not really, but still — Allison did totally look like a jerk. Joe took it incredibly well though, as he’s been beaten down over the years.
I feel like if my psychic wife lied to my mother and told her that she would beat her cancer, I would be a lot more pissed than Joe was. After all, what’s the use of spending years wasting money on doctors for things like check-ups and screenings when you’ve been guaranteed life and health?
Joe and Allison have the perfect marriage though, so not even Allison kind of killing Joe’s mom is going to come between them. This whole storyline seemed to serve a few purposes: one was getting Kathy Baker back one more time (this is her fifth appearance on the series) and giving her a nice montage. The second purpose is yet to be determined, but they spent a lot of time talking about her will to not have it come up again. It looks as though Joe and Allison may be able to both afford to go to school after all.
Before she left though, Marjorie did say one interesting thing: that she peeked and saw some darkness ahead. She followed it up with, “It’s going to be a wonderful life,” so I can’t imagine that anything too terrible is going to befall the DuBois family, but it was quite an ominous statement. There’s no way that the series is going to end with Joe and Allison getting a divorce, and if one of the kids dies and Marjorie says, “It’s going to be a wonderful life,” then that’s just crazy. What do you think the darkness is going to be?
Because we’re coming to the end of the series and there’s so much going on with the DuBois family, the murders of the week are almost starting to get in the way. The plot with the asbestos was okay, but it was really beside the point this week. We only have a few episodes to go, and Ariel has been off at college for the last several. We need some DuBois family time before we go!
Maybe someone should write a note to all the killers in Phoenix to just chill out for the next couple of weeks.

I don’t agree with your interpretation of Allison’s lie, I think Joe’s mom would still use every resource available to cure cancer (the doctor said they themselves had no idea it got bad so fast, which indicates they still had checkups on her) because Allison told her she would be fine in the future, she didn’t say it would magically disappear for no reason she just said her upcoming tests/procedure wouldn’t kill her.
Also I think Joe understands Allison lied to give his mom hope, so she wouldn’t spend the next months/years wondering how long she had to certain death.
