Charisma Carpenter, on Joss-less Buffy movie: “Stupid”

The old 'Buffy' cast members are coming out of the woodwork against the idea of a new movie without the involvement of Joss Whedon. Like that's a surprise.

I think we need to keep a running tally of the number of Buffy alums who think the reported Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie — being created without Joss Whedon‘s involvement, by Warner Bros. — is a bad idea. We’ve already heard from Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, Tony Head and Joss himself, and they have little to say in support of it.

The latest cast member from the original series to thumb their nose at the proposed Buffy movie is Charisma Carpenter, who portrayed Cordelia Chase in the television show’s first three seasons, and then on Angel for a few more. Via Twitter, last week:

@jprit13: @CLCarpenter1970 I was wondering what you though of the new Buffy movie? It’d be so much better if it had Cordy!” stupid. No joss? A real head scratcher.

It’s not much of a surprise that most of the original Scoobies would think any sort of Buffy-related material without Whedon’s involvement wouldn’t be a good idea. It’s no secret that Joss takes good care of those he’s worked with before, often involving them in many of his other projects. They appear to be an understandably tightly-knit group, which is partly why it’s so easy for Buffyverse fans to follow Joss and those who’ve worked with him wherever they go.

So, this begs the question: Are Buffy fans more interested in Joss Whedon’s involvement or in simply seeing their beloved series come back to life, no matter the means? The first movie wasn’t nearly as successful as the television series, and I’ve heard or read somewhere before that Joss wasn’t all that happy with how his vision was handled there. Could it be that a better movie — even without the involvement of Joss and the original cast — would be a good thing for the franchise? Might it ignite a new group of fans eager to pick up the old television series DVDs? Should we Buffy fans even care?

Who’s next to come out in non-support for the Joss-less Buffy movie?

I’ve just caught a few episodes in the last few months, but I’m a Firefly fan and I personally think that Buffy the show worked because it did have that Whedon touch to it. Sure, the movie could be good without him, but I’m not holding my breath.

Keith, I think you have a typo above. It should be “It’s not much of a surprise that most of the original Scoobies wouldn’t think any sort of Buffy-related material without Whedon’s involvement would be a good idea.”

Eep! You’re right. Thanks, fixed it.

Oh, I’m sure that a Buffy movie made without Joss Whedon could be a good film, but it wouldn’t be a Joss Whedon Buffy film, therefore making it lesser by definition. I certainly won’t be going to see it.

whats the point of a buffy movie without all the origional cast,it just wont be he same and a waste of money.i sure would not see it even if it just cost $1 to see it.

A “Buffy” movie without Joss Whedon is like a LORD OF OF THE RINGS movie without Peter Jackson. I agree with the original Scoobies and the rest of the “Buffy” fans. No Whedon, no “Buffy” movie.

I am a huge Buffy/Angel/Firefly/not-so-much Dollhouse fan, and I was disappointed to hear that Joss wouldn’t be involved. He’s busy with The Avengers Movie so no surprise. Since, for some reason unknown to me, Joss couldn’t get the Wonder Woman script right (how can that be?, and also all three shows live on in graphic novels under his tutelage, I am hopeful for this NEW incarnation of our favorite chick who hangs out in cemeteries. It is unfortunate that people age and that movies typically demand young, younger faces, but, as far as the rumor goes, I have no problem with Kristen Stewart being the next Buffy. It is fitting since, apparently, Stephanie Meyers never heard of Buffy, according to her “dream” incarnation of her books. I am looking forward to the movie, though I doubt it will be much better than the first one which did have Joss’ involvement.

All I have to say is with none of the main character’s are involved(i could even deal with eliza dushku or d.b woodside being involved in it). Joss Whedon isn’t involved which is plain dumb and Kristen Stewart will be about as convincing as Buffy as she is as Bella(She may have the Looks but her acting leaves something to be desired) this movie is doomed to fail but hopefully then Joss will show them once again how to do it properly and resurrect a bigger and better buffy comic spin off or adult swim cartoon or even tv show. it’s like trying to make over Back to the Future it should never happen.

It’s not so much as I oppose it I just don’t see it necessary to make a movie, it had a good finish, it told it’s story, it influenced a generation, created a new hero and made it’s footnote in history. The comic continuation is still great so why bother ruining a good thing? It’s not even that old it doesn’t need to be “revised” the fan following is stronger now than when the show first began, just don’t see the point of there being a movie, even if Joss was involved
