Top Chef – Jimmy Fallon, Top Chef super-fan!

The 'Late Night' host receives a birthday lunch of his favorite foods, lovingly made by the 'Top Chef' contestants. If only all of us were so lucky!

- Season 8, Episode 9 - "Feeding Fallon"

The quickfire this week was fondue, which I thought was awesome. I love fondue, even if it’s just cheese or chocolate (mmm, cheese). Still, Padma challenged the chefs to do something more creative with the dish, so most of the contestants did a brothy fondue. Blaize did a chili-chocolate covered banana with a liquid nitrogen fondue, which I thought was pretty cool but didn’t make the top. Antonia’s scrumptious looking smoked salmon with crème fraîche was in the top, but Dale’s pho-inspired fondue won out. He won a trip to Napa Valley, but no immunity.

They were surprised to find themselves at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon playing one of the show’s games. I don’t really watch Fallon’s Late Night, so the game was new to me, but essentially they had to capture a picture flashing by with their camera phone to decide what they’ll be cooking for his birthday. Some people got their heart’s desire  — Carla was over the moon for the chicken pot pie. Others, like Antonia with her cow’s tongue, were more apprehensive. Maybe it’s just me, but having Fabio pronouncing burger as “boooger” is maybe the best thing about the season so far.

It was cool to see Jimmy Fallon really jazzed about the food. He mentioned he was a fan of the show and you can tell just by his enthusiasm during the lunch and the winner’s table that it’s true.

Antonia did well with the beef tongue … I’ve never had it, but I still have a strange history with the meat. When I was little, my mom used to take me to a deli that always had beef tongue for sale on display. It’s good to know the tongue can be delicious … maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to serve it.

Chicken pot pie was never my favorite as a kid (because I was picky with my veggies), but man, Carla’s pot pie looked awesome. And the patrons agreed. When Padma asked Tom if he liked it, he just said, “Too busy eating.” He didn’t even look up from the bowl. And it was Carla that won not only a trip to Tokyo, but also the opportunity to do a cooking segment on Late Night.

Fabio’s hamburger was more like a meatball and his cheese sauce was kind of gross. Dale’s Philly cheesesteak was super salty. Tiffany’s chicken and dumplings just didn’t hit the mark. It was Fabio that was sent home, and it sucks because it was something he had never really done (although if you’re a chef in America for more than a year, you should know how to cook a hamburger).

Next week, some of the Sesame Street gang will be at the quickfire, which makes me so happy. I might be in my twenties, but I still love the Muppets and Sesame Street. What can I say, I’m a kid at heart!

This is the second week in a row where you have called Angelo “Antonio”, please correct this. Thank you.

It was really the formation and recipe of Fabio’s Boorgur (not boooger are you wrote) that sunk him, not the cooking and I was definitely disappointed to see him go. It really should have been Tiffany.

And no mention of the constantly annoying antics of big bird and gonzo’s love child? I really wish she had been knocked out when she deserved it early on, she’s staging some sort of mini comeback just like she did in her own season -__-

I think I’m just so creeped out by Angelo that it’s easier to not think about him … even his name.

I corrected it.

And I’m still convinced Fabio said Boooger at least once in the episode.

Carla is the most real person of the chefs. She doesn’t gossip about the other chefs, DOESN’T JUDGE HOW THEY LOOK, seems like a genuine person and is an awesome cook. I hope she wins – she deserves it.

I think I need to go eat a chicken pot pie now. Or a boooger (I heard it too).
