Diary of a Curb Your Enthusiasm virgin – That’ll teach John McEnroe not to drive himself

You’re Ted Danson … why in the world do you want to be buried next to Larry David? And why would either of them want to be buried next to Larry’s agent? There should at least be a private NBC sitcom section in the cemetery.

(Season 6, Episodes 5-6)

I feel myself crawling to the finish with my Curb Your Enthusiasm virgin diary (I watched and reviewed season seven when it first aired). I’m not sure if it’s because I’m sad to see it go, or because the sixth season was nothing to write home about. Maybe it’s a little of both?

6.5 “The Freak Book”

So the freak book was weird, right? I’m sure such a thing exists, and it did wrap up well at the end, but it seemed as if Larry the writer just wanted to be perceived as a “bad” guy for laughing at freaks in a book. And I can’t imagine why Larry would think it would be something Ted Danson would be interested in as a gift.

I love when we’re made to see Larry as a “man of the people,” like when he was worried about what the limo driver was going to do during the party. Juxtapose that with his laughing at freaks, and where does it leave you? But I loved when Charlie the driver (Toby Huss) went into the Danson house and got drunk. Larry having to drive him home in the limo was funny.

And then Larry having to do Charlie a favor the next day and pick up John McEnroe from the airport for a Paul McCartney concert was awesome. The detour to the cemetery was great, and I loved when the mourners mistakenly got into the limo. McEnroe getting fed up and making Larry dump them on the side of some random road was amazing.

I can’t believe that John McEnroe wouldn’t have recognized “Charlie” as Larry David, especially after they got out of the car, but Larry David and John McEnroe getting thrown out of a party, even for laughing at a freak? No way.

6.6 “The Rat Dog”

It was interesting that Tim Meadows showed up and did not play himself. Couldn’t he have guest starred as himself married to a deaf woman? Instead he appeared as Hal … wonder why. Anyway, the whole slow toaster thing was weak, as was the ongoing misunderstandings with Hal’s wife.

What was hilarious was when Jeff’s exterminator Mike (Kevin P. Farley, younger brother of Chris Farley) volunteered to accompany Larry to Loretta’s (Vivica A. Fox) daughter Keisha’s (Carla Jeffery) school production of Grease. I love how Larry was made to feel so bad about first saying no that he finally agreed. It was random enough for Larry to be going, but Mike the Exterminator? Awesome! Mike’s stomping on the rat dog was horrifying, but I love that Larry showed up with Jeff’s exterminator as his date.

Larry and Leon (J.B. Smoove) accidentally switching phones was funny too. I loved when Larry yelled at Leon’s potential employer because he thought he was the telemarketer that had been bothering Larry. And Leon talking to Hal about how he’d returned his wife after sleeping with her once was awesome. I can’t believe Hal thought it was Larry doing a tasteless impersonation of a black guy!
