Diary of a Curb Your Enthusiasm virgin – Run far, Cheryl!

Having seen season seven, Cheryl leaving Larry didn’t come as a surprise. And it’s not quite as satisfying knowing what happens between them next season ... but I still loved Cheryl’s awakening!

(Season 6, Episodes 7-8)

While I appreciate the absurdity behind no fly underwear, the truth is that tighty whities aren’t that far off from being fly-less. And how about boxer briefs — don’t some of them have flies almost as crazily constructed as briefs? But I loved the breakdown between those men who go through the gate and those who go over the fence … that was some cute wordplay.

6.7 “The TiVo Guy”

Finally things are right with the world … or at least Larry David’s world. Cheryl David finally awoke to the fact that Larry “can’t do anything like a normal person” after Larry hung up on Cheryl when she was on a plane that had hit heavy turbulence and he had the TiVo guy over. I don’t know how she ever could have been under the impression that anyone else does things like Larry, but there is definitely “no other side” to him; he’s a nut.

Despite that clear fact, some of the people who walked out on Larry when they felt forced to choose sides was crazy. I’m not saying that I’d expect anyone to choose Larry, but a restaurant? Self-proclaimed best friend Marty Funkhouser? I think the joke might have gone farther than it needed to.

There were a few dinner-related incidents that were funny this episode. The first was when Larry called to cancel his reservation the night that Cheryl left him, and the hostess responded in disbelief to Larry’s excuse that his wife had just left him. I loved Larry promising more advanced notice the next time his wife walks out on him.

The other thing was when Larry was eating alone and the guy sitting next to him was talking loudly on his phone. I can’t imagine another human being daring to do this, but Larry talking to an imaginary person across the table loudly was hilarious. More importantly, it was totally within reason for Larry to do it given the circumstances. Awesome! I wish more of us had the nerve to do that.

Larry and Lucy Lawless were funny together, but Lucy Lawless agreeing to go out on a date with Larry? Cheryl herself was a huge stretch, so I don’t think so.

6.8 “The N Word”

I liked Dr. Flomm (Brenda Strong) for Larry. The joke about their date being like a doctor’s appointment was kind of dumb, but I think they were fun together. And I loved the humor behind the note that she wrote him, and Larry having to get the pharmacist to read it for him. Larry seems to have an awful lot of run-ins with pharmacists.

I didn’t get the thing with the Blacks threatening to leave after Larry got aroused while hugging Auntie Rae (Ellia English); how’s that a threat? Isn’t that exactly what Larry wants? That didn’t make much sense.

Jeff’s shaved head scaring off Ben Stiller as a client was also stupid, although it was good to see Stiller back after he ran off while rehearsing for The Producers. But overall this was a weak episode.

I can’t believe I only have two episodes left until I finish my virgin diary!
