Pretty Little Liars – Fashion nightmares

I'm usually not a huge fan of fashion show episodes in my favorite shows. However, 'Pretty Little Liars' does it right! (Would A have it any other way?)

- Season 2, Episode 6 - "Never Letting Go"

Everybody loves a good fashion show, right?

Well, to be honest, I was always a bit turned off when my favorite shows tossed a low-budget, corny fashion show into one of its episodes. Some shows that I can recall off the top of my head include My So-Called Life; Beverly Hills, 90210 (the original); and Gilmore Girls. The most atrocious of these were the dreaded “Mother-Daughter” fashion shows.

Although they had some funny and touching moments, I was always a bit bored, because they seemed to be the focus of the whole episode. All the drama centered on who felt left out; whose mom was a deadbeat; who couldn’t “think like a model”; and who underwent the most surprising transformation.

However, the Pretty Little Liars fashion show is an exception! Not only does the plot of the show go on completely untouched (save the characters scurrying here and there to prepare and then star in the show), but the event itself has a freaky, scary twist where A undoubtedly makes her mark. Not since Jenny Humphrey’s guerrilla fashion show in Gossip Girl has the runway been hijacked by a crazy person!

Am I the only girl watching this show who wasn’t mesmerized by the outfits, shoes, hair and makeup? I don’t deny that they were awesome. But this is Pretty Little Liars. Every episode is like a fashion show! These girls always look top-notch. So for me, the 3-5 minutes that they spent walking the runway were sort of like lost time to me. On the flip side, it did work very well to build tension and make the audience wonder where A was and when she or he would pounce next.

It looks as though the show might be phasing Ezra out and Jason in, for Aria (?)! I think I like this development. Sure, nothing’s happened … yet. But I can just tell it’s going there.

Not to say I don’t like Ezra. OK, maybe I don’t actually like him. I definitely don’t like the way they are relating to each other lately. I really don’t blame him for not wanting to embrace Aria at Ian’s funeral. Like I mentioned in an earlier post about their goodbye kiss in the parking lot, it’s not as though their relationship is as “free and clear” as she thinks. It’s still statutory rape, isn’t it? Not to mention inappropriate for a man who used to be the students’ teacher kissing a current student in front of her family, friends, and complete strangers. Just saying.

And why does Aria’s “thing” have to be seeing a guy in secret? I felt bad for her friends who thought she was texting with Ezra when she was actually communicating with Jason. It’s sort of like the way it was before they knew about Ezra. One more thing: when Jason said, “Can I drop you somewhere?” Aria’s expression totally said, “Yes, right here on the floor!”

Speaking of communication, Hanna and her dad have a very amusing “throw iPod earbuds in ears / throw hands in the air in exasperation” schtick going on. Not to make fun of their family situation, but I could almost picture the script, instructing Tom to “act fed up and confused while still maintaining middle-aged swagger” and “stir drink distractedly with a bereaved and contemplative expression.” In fact, all the dads are pretty poor actors, with the exception of Chad Lowe. My least favorite has got to be Spencer’s dad. What a weirdo!

Pretty Little Quotes:

“It’s all fun and sexy ’til someone hacks up a hairball.” — Aria, referring to Hanna’s hair getting stuck in her lip gloss during her kiss with Caleb

“Slow down, I haven’t had coffee … [takes mug] I just wanted to drink it, not swim laps.” — Aria, responding to the bowl-sized mug of coffee Spencer gives her

“Mona is five feet of insidious snark with a side ponytail, and I just wanna grab it, and I wanna yank it really, really hard.” — Spencer, to Toby

“How come I have no date, and you have a date who brought a date?” — Hanna, to Emily
