True Blood – No one is as they seem

This week's 'True Blood' was all about people not being exactly what they appeared to be. Whether it is amnesia, possession, or full on transformation, plenty of characters resembled completely different people. Was it for the best?

- Season 4, Episode 6 - "I Wish I Was the Moon"

Seriously, how many ways can people be in disguise? You have Eric who has lost his memory, then there’s Marnie who is possessed by the spirit of a dead person (and Lafayette, too, for a few minutes), there’s Tommy who discovered that he can transform into other people and rode around as Sam for a while, and thanks to a spell Pam isn’t quite her old self either. Thank goodness Jason wasn’t added to the list by becoming a were-panther. I think it would have just been too much.

I have to admit, though, that Marnie just got a whole lot more interesting. I complained about her lack of flashiness in my review of last week’s episode, but I think things are going to turn around with her from here on out. I wouldn’t have minded seeing her complete transformation into Antonia a little earlier in the season. I am looking forward to some clear danger existing from without the vampire community. There is only so much I can take of Eric and Bill bitching at each other and scheming against each other.

On that note, I’m sure that a lot of the shippers will be excited that Sookie and Eric finally got it on at the end of the episode. It seems like it has been a long time coming. I certainly don’t watch the show for the As-the-Sookie-turns plot lines, but I have to say anything that keeps her away from the boring, boring Bill is good with me. As Pam said: “Let me tell you a little something about King Bill – he’s a self loathing, power hungry, pompous, little dork.” I love you Pam. Get well soon.

I still have no clue what is going on with Lafayette and Jesus’s field trip to Mexico, but I’m figuring it is going to play a pretty significant part of the end game of the season. I’m curious about that because I know enough about the books to know that neither of these characters was a player in the fourth novel. I shouldn’t be too surprised, though, Alan Ball has taken many a liberty with the books. I do wonder what Charlaine Harris thinks about that. I know if I were her I would probably be a little annoyed … until I looked at my sales figures.

I have found the shifters story to be a little disappointing all season. It has all seemed just a tad predictable. As soon as Luna mentioned shifters who could change into other humans, I figured Sam or Tommy was going to turn into one. At the time, I thought it was going to be Sam, but Tommy was probably the better choice. Then in this episode as soon as Tommy started changing, it wasn’t hard to guess that he was going to end up with Luna, throwing a whole wrench into that relationship. I have to give some huge kudos to Sam Trammell, though, for some excellent acting. him playing “Tommy” was brilliant in this episode.

Finally, there was one thought that I couldn’t shake from my head this week: Is True Blood turning into Heroes? Don’t get me wrong, here, True Blood is still better than Heroes ever was in its later seasons, but there are some striking similarities. Sookie admitted it herself in this episode: it seems like everyone is getting superpowers. There aren’t that many normal humans left on the show, and the majority of the ones that do remain are sleeping with vampires, addicted to V, or battling evil demon puppets. Aside from that, the cast just seems to be growing out of control. Have you noticed the preponderance of names in the opening credits? With that many characters to service, storywise, it’s hard to have very cohesive episodes. I have to admit, though, there was a lot of forward momentum this week, which is a place where Heroes always seemed to fail. Also, no one fake-died — that’s a plus.

Sam Trammell playing Tommy as Sam was wild. He spoke differently..moved differently.. and then when he fired Sookie I thought it was great. But the best part of that was the song that was playing in the background as he emerged out into the bar..it was Brookes and Dunn singing I’m a Brand New Man! The music always fits so well on that show!
