The League Season 2 DVD is a mixed bag

Diving into the 2nd season DVDs, I find some positives and some disappointments. Good news? More Taco Tone productions. Bad news? Well ...

I was super excited to get The League Season 2 in the mail. It’s one of the funniest and most underrated shows on TV. While I still love the 2nd season, the DVD set itself was just … OK.

The Taco Tone videos were mostly what we’ve seen from the episodes (Vinegar Strokes, Naginata, etc.), but there is a whole new El Notario commercial. It involves a chicken as Taco’s business partner. Also, Ruxin comes in as Taco’s super-official lawyer. The other noteworthy Taco Tone video is the extended and uninterrupted wedding video from Ruxin’s anniversary. Very funny stuff there.

My favorite extra were the alternate takes. You really get to see how versatile these actors are in their improvisation. Jason Mantzoukas had some hilarious and inappropriate Rafi improvs that I’m not at all surprised didn’t make it to air. In the separate outakes, you also get to see how easily the cast make each other laugh during these improvs.

What I liked most about the DVD set were the episodes themselves because I love this show. Season 2 was a definite improvement on season 1. What was slightly disappointing were the extended episodes replacing some of the broadcast versions. I would rather have the broadcast versions of the episodes still be on the disc even if that means putting the extended scenes into the deleted scenes.

There are also absolutely no commentaries, which was a letdown. On top of that, there aren’t any behind the scenes videos. Considering how many guest stars they had this season — football players and comedic actors alike — I wish we could have seen more interviews with the cast and guests.

When it comes down to it, the suggested retail price for the Season 2 DVD is $29.98. With only 13 episodes, I would expect more extras for that price. If you can get it for a good deal, it’s still a good set for fans. If not, watch the season when it gets put up on Netflix (season 1 is already up on Instant). Oh, and if you haven’t checked The League out yet, you really should.
