Psych gets a Hangover, too

'Psych' went out last night, had a little too much fun, MAY have been drugged, and can't figure out how it got wherever it is that he woke up. That, or the show is just stuck in another 'Hangover' send-up.

- Season 6, Episode 2 - "Last Night Gus "

I get that many shows do theme episodes, and Psych probably does them better than anyone not hanging out at Greendale Community College. But, for the love of all things holy, people, can we move on from The Hangover send-ups? Despite my frustration with the set up of the episode, it did lead to several funny sub-plots.

Foremost of which had to be the potential change to Juliet and Shawn’s relationship. Moving in together is a big step in any couple, but I didn’t know that “thinking about moving in together” could be such a pivotal step as well. At first, I wondered what kind of person could settle for the idea of “some version of Shawn” wanting to live together. Then, I quickly remembered that Juliet knew what she was getting into with Shawn Spencer. Plus, let’s not forget his time hooked up to the lie detector last week … and the L-word that slipped out. That, other than being a big swoon moment for the audience, also had to give our favorite detective (sorry Lassiter) more than a little confidence about her relationship.

I sometimes wonder if Corbin Bernsen has ever had a better role than Henry Spenser. Looking at his IMDB page, I might be hanging WAY out on a limb with that statement (LA Law in particular had me rethinking my position), but I stand by the thought. Gus and Lassiter might be Shawn’s straight men, but Henry has always had a different dynamic with him. In the past several seasons, though, Henry has really found his own place on the show.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I like my Woody in smaller doses. I like Kurt Fuller (who was hilarious hosting the Psych panel at SDCC), and I think he’s a great foil for both Shawn and Lassiter, but in his case, less is more. Not unlike Glee’s Sue Sylvester, finding the right balance for a character so over the top is critical. The way the plot worked in this particular episode, once he was involved, he had to be there until the end – I get that … but let’s keep it to the right balance from now on.
