There might be hope for True Blood yet

With Ball no longer the primary writer for the show, could season 5 "come out of the dark" and get back on track?

I left True Blood a long, long time ago.

I was originally introduced to the show via Charlaine HarrisDead Until Dark, a rather interesting take on the vampire genre. And, for the most part, season one of the HBO series followed that book. Somewhere within the first few episodes of the second season, however, the show began to “hit the dirt” and take a nosedive from “story” and instead delve into soft core pornography. The plots denigrated into ridiculousness. I just couldn’t handle any more of the show.

But over the following seasons, quite a few people were willing to stick with it. There’s a nifty post written by Anne Helen Petersen who is “… embarrassed by how little it takes to keep me glued to a show that is otherwise so truly bad” and who offers some compelling insight as to why one would continue to tune in. I suggest you give it a look.

It was evident midway through season two that True Blood needed help. It was a ship beginning to list and it needed righting. Rumors abounded about Alan Ball leaving, something that quite possibly would helped the directionlessness of the show. But … they were all rumors.

It doesn’t look like that anymore, however. Ball is stepping down as head writer. Maybe there’s hope for the series after all.

It’s too late for me. Nothing could bring me back to the show. Nothing. Since True Blood’s introduction, there has been an explosion of fangs in film and television and print. And it’s still going strong. (We even have a strong fan base here on CliqueClack for The Vampire Diaries.) But too many bloodsuckers made it easy for me to come to the decision to get out while the getting was good, before things got really out of hand with the genre. (And believe me: Things have gotten out of hand where vampires are involved.)

But for those who hold the series near and dear to their hearts, maybe the news about Ball stepping down and taking a much smaller production role will cause a lot of discontented fans to “see the light” … so to speak.
