Diary of a One Tree Hill Virgin – Trouble in Paradise

I am now halfway through the second season of 'One Tree Hill.' The storylines are getting more complicated, and unexpected friendships have developed. Join me as I experience the show for the first time!

So much has happened since I wrote my last One Tree Hill  entry! To save some time and to not distract from the “reactions” portion of this post, I’m going to sum up the major events bullet-point style, from Lucas and Keith’s accident to my current stopping point (Season 2, Episode 9: “The Trick Is To Keep Breathing”):

  • Lucas survives the accident and comes out of the coma (well, duh).
  • Lucas breaks up with Brooke, but does not get together with Peyton.
  • Karen feels unable to trust Keith and, later, rejects his marriage proposal.
  • Haley and Nathan GET EFFING MARRIED.
  • Keith and Lucas leave town, but head back soon enough because …
  • Dan Scott suffers a heart attack as he is signing divorce papers. Deb finds him and almost leaves him there.
  • Dan decides he wants to get to know Lucas; Lucas finds an envelope in a keepsake box containing mementos of his childhood.
  • Keith takes over at Dan Scott motors while Dan recovers. He offers Lucas a job, but Lucas passes it onto Nathan, and Dan gets angry with Keith for hiring his son.
  • Karen starts taking a business class and begins a relationship with her professor.
  • Dan walks in on Deb and Keith cuddling by the fire — you know what that means — and later tells Karen. Karen confronts Deb about it and Deb lies.
  • Karen and Peyton collaborate to open Tric, a club featuring an all-ages night. Peyton falls under the influence of a sleazy manager who offers her coke (not talking about the beverage).
  • Felix and his sister Anna move to town; Felix starts having a “Friends With Benefits” relationship with Brooke, and Lucas starts dating Anna.
  • Nathan rejects an offer to go to High Flyers basketball camp for the summer because he wants to be there to support Haley. Haley has her “breakthrough moment” as a musician at the Tric opening, lies to Nathan about a subsequent rehearsal with douchey Chris, and nearly stands up Nathan at the formal, where the two are crowned king and queen.
  • Coach is having serious problems with his eyesight that will probably require surgery.
  • Lucas and Nathan go to get tested for HCM, the hereditary heart condition their father has. While Nathan tested negative (or so he says), Lucas refused the test.
  • Keith meets a woman (Maria Menounous) at the dealership and starts dating her.
  • Brooke’s “rich girl” days are over as her parents have come into financial trouble. They are slowly selling all of their possessions, and Brooke’s getting a reality check.

So, what are my thoughts on all of this?

I’ll try to be as concise and organized as possible when I go through all of my reactions. I see Dan becoming a “softer version of himself,” both literally and figuratively. I still don’t really trust him — but then again, I don’t trust Deb either. I thought she was going to be a good friend to Karen, but there is something a little dangerous about her that I do not like. She is pretty selfish.

I feel badly for Brooke, but her family’s recent hardship will help develop her into a more complete character. I see Mouth pining for her during each episode, and I wish that she would actually give him a chance. I saw it going somewhere before she found out that he lied to her about the dollhouse.

Haley is starting to get on my nerves. She’s like a lost 2-year-old at the mall. There are so many things to do and see! So many people to become friends with! So much music to be scared to sing! So many people wanting things for her and from her! I don’t really see her marriage to Nathan going well for a little while, especially after he planned a special night for her for the formal, and she couldn’t just say no to Chris (who, by the way, is a complete jerk). Why should she care what Chris thinks about her music and her ability to make a record? Nathan is the one supporting her, and he should have been the one she was with that night.

I really hope that Peyton does not succumb to the pressure of taking drugs. During the formal, when she felt lonely and then someone spilled red wine on her mom’s beautiful dress, I could tell that she was facing a moment of weakness. She told Anna that she flushed the drugs, but did she? This could end badly.

I do not really know what Maria Menounous is doing on this show. She is another one who seems shady to me. She has hardly told Keith anything about herself. And is it just me, or is Keith totally awkward in that relationship? I think that seeing him with Karen is just about the only thing I can make sense of.

I have a feeling that Anna is a lesbian, or is at least bisexual. Felix referred to her “past” in an episode or two, which could very well involve a relationship that her family might have deemed “unacceptable.”  She also got defensive when Peyton was telling her she was beautiful at the formal, saying, “Stop being so gay, Peyton.” Anna’s attraction to women may also explain her odd behavior around Lucas when they are about to get intimate.

I am enjoying the friendship that Lucas and Nathan have made. The two of them have come a long way. I wonder what will happen if Haley and Nathan get a divorce — will Lucas have to choose between the two of them, or will everyone be able to be mature about it?

But, I’m getting ahead of myself here … Nathan just ignored one phone call from Haley. They could very well kiss and make up during the next episode.
