Grimm – Suddenly, Hank flies right

Hank greets Wesen. Hank punches Wesen. Wesen falls down, goes boom. And Hank? Well ... he's cured. It's really as simple as that.

- Season 2, Episode 3 - "Bad Moon Rising"

One of the biggest things I’ve been trying to work out with Grimm? What, exactly, is going to become of Hank.

The dude’s been tortured nine ways to Sunday. His encounter with Monroe in the forest didn’t do him any good. The guy he shot who turned from Wesen to human right before his very eyes didn’t help matters. Adalind’s potion about killed him and left a “lasting” impression. And, as of last episode, he’s even become wary of his partner. This episode? Poor Hank’s talking to a shrink trying to make sense of it all and freaks out. His issues abound.

But! Lo and behold, who’d’ve thunk all it would take would be for Hank to deck a Coyotl square in the schnozz and knock it on its ass in order for him to stand up and fly right?

Suddenly all’s well with the world! Hank’s right as rain! He’s even come to grips with his craziness! It was as simple as washing that Wesen right out of his hair. I like the direction Hank is taking in the series … through no choice of his own. I wasn’t expecting the events of “Full Moon Rising” to take the turn they did in his “recovery.” Not only did I think it was refreshing, it was just the right time to get put focus back on him … and not via any of that wimpified bromance monkey business.

Speaking of matters of the heart (I’m just a master of transition … aren’t I?), I’m still at an impasse when it comes to Juliette. It may have been a better thing for her to have remained in a coma and let that situation simmer. Ever since her rejection of Nick’s proposal and their inexplicable “What? They’re back to being cozy as if nothing’s happened?!?” attitude, I simply haven’t been able to take her seriously. I’m still on Aunt Marie’s side: Dump her. Granted, that’s a little tough to do right now in light of recent events, but …

Regardless, with its third episode firmly tucked beneath its belt, Grimm continues to excite.

Notes:

  • I didn’t see any “bad moon rising” … did you? *heheheheheheh*
  • Ooowaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Wasn’t Capt Renard cute last night as he was talking to Nick about Catherine Schade, feigning obliviousness?
  • I literally guffawed out loud when Wu sarcastigated to Nick at the station (below).
  • Coyotls are a cringey, creepy lot. But if they truly had a pack mentality as coyotes do, they would have banded together and ripped Nick and Hank to shreds in the barn, guns be damned.
  • It was nice to see Mark Pellegrino (Jacob on Lost, Supernatural) and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him in the series. And John Pyper-Ferguson (Caprica, Alphas) has always had a certain sort of swagger I dig.

Quotations:

“So … let me get this straight: In the last six hours you’ve arrested six villains, saved a damsel in distress and reunited a family … while I’ve filled out three dozen overtime reports and scrubbed out the coffeemaker. Yeah, we’ve all put in a rich, full day.” — Wu to Nick, sarcastically

“These look like fertility symbols. You have any idea what that means?” — Nick to Monroe
“Uh … well, Nick … when a mommy Coyotl and a daddy Coyotl love each other very much …” — Monroe
“Okay …” — Nick

Mondays are something to relish now that GRIMM is on the telly. It is my “Don’t bother me. I’m watching my show” show.

ok..so help me out here. Hank can see Weson change from their “normal” face to what they really are, but Hank has no special powers. So if he can see them..why can’t the general population see them all and why is everyone not holed up in their houses afraid to go out?
I know I need to let go for some of these shows..and I do love this one! Just wondering!

Hey Toni –

For the most part, Wesen can keep themselves controlled so normal humans don’t notice them. For the humans, that DO notice – they either normalize the event (convince themselves the guy wore a mask) OR they go crazy (like Hank did). That’s why Monroe didn’t want to change in front of Juliette for fear of making her batsh*t insane ;)

I’ve been absolutely loving this season, even Nick acting has grown on me! I love what they’ve done with Hank (very Buffyesque!)

Toni, from what I understand there is 2 different transformations the creatures can have, unintentional one when they offguard or emotional–which only the Grimm can see– and then the intentional one which everyone can see but they are in full control of.

I wouldn’t say Hank is cured … but knowing that you aren’t alone in seeing things must be such a relief .. . The real question is how much Nick shares and how Hank deals with it all going forward. The fact that he’s a cop will probably help .. but who knows what will happen down the road. I hope that knowing the truth makes the two of them stronger

. . . . .

Gordon:

You’ll note I put “recovery” in quotations above. Hank’s still got a road ahead of him in understanding what’s going on. My implication was such that he did a pretty good about face having had to deal with Hayden Walker in such an abrupt manner … and with a pretty cool head.

I’m curious to see what road the writers take him going forward.
