Lindor Truffles are too damned sweet

Lindor TrufflesThe other night I popped open a bottle of Zin for myself (Yes, I said myself. Don’t judge me). After my meal was complete, I still had plenty of the red wine left to be enjoyed. My mind immediately jumped to the bag of Lindt brand Lindor Truffles that I received as part of a Christmas gift. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Lindt balls, as I refer to them. For my money, the best truffles are from Harry and David. Not one to pass up a big bag of chocolate though, I’ve been digging into the truffles since Christmas Eve (I especially love the peanut butter ones).

I love dark chocolate with red wine. I mean, really, who doesn’t? If you haven’t tried this combination yet, I highly recommend it. I was particularly excited because the bag of truffles that I had included extra dark balls, 60% cocoa. I should have known right then that they wouldn’t be dark enough. After all, if you’re only 60% cocoa, that means you have 40% of something else, in this case I think it was all sugar. I was slightly disappointed that the extra dark was still very sweet, sweeter even than what I would normally consider a bittersweet chocolate.

I would have loved a nice 70% or even 80% super dark chocolate to go with the red wine, but the extra dark truffles were certainly worth eating. Even though they were a little sweet, I still ate them, and they were still delicious with the Zin. For the really dark chocolate, I recommend the Dagoba brand bars. I know my sister loves them, and they are very good, with an amazing variety, separated by region and cocoa percentage. Of course, I’m a big Star Wars dork, so I can’t think about Dagoba chocolate with thinking of Dagobah, the planet where Yoda hung out.
