The top 10 are revealed on American Idol

The Top 10 for season 12 come with (relatively) few surprises given the pool of talent offered. I was disappointed one of my picks didn’t make it, however …

It’s the Top 10 reveal on American Idol, folks.

I know … you’re dying to know what my score was based on my post from yesterday. If you read it and watched the reveal, you know I hit 70% overall. And … I did better with the girls than I did with the guys. (Wait … that didn’t come out right on any level … did it?)

The season 12 American Idol Top 10 are as follows: Paul Jolley, Burnell Taylor, Curtis Finch, Jr.*, Devin Velez*, Lazaro Arbos*, Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover*, Angie Miller*, Amber Holbcomb* and Kree Harrison*. (Asterisks denote my picks.)

Of those who got through, I’m going to opinionate on the three I didn’t choose to advance — Paul, Burnell and Janelle.

Burnell first: I wasn’t thrilled with Burnell’s performance a few days ago, but I saw enough to be convinced he could very well grab a top spot. And he did. So, there’s that.

So what is it about [Paul Jolley]? The pretty boy factor? His outward gay-ness? I’m thinking it’s a combination of these two things because it definitely isn’t his singing ability.

But … Paul? You heard him earlier in the week. So did I. Based on that performance alone, he’s nothing special. He’s just there … and that’s it. So what is it about him? The pretty boy factor? His outward gay-ness? I’m thinking it’s a combination of these two things because it definitely isn’t his singing ability. He couldn’t hit his “victory song” right once Seacrust busted him through the video wall and onto the stage for his announcement. No matter how much cuteness he exudes, he’s not all that.

Lastly, Janelle. She just doesn’t elicit any kind of exuberance in her performances. And if she has, I haven’t caught the clue yet. Maybe she’ll surprise me down the line, but right now I’m simply not on board her train.

Look: I know it’s early in the competition. There’s a lot of schoolin’ to get under everyone’s belts. Maybe the likes of Janelle and Paul will win me over down the line. (But I don’t think so.)

My biggest disappointment of the evening? Charlie Askew not making it. He was the contestant who had more to him than just the novelty aspect.

My biggest disappointment of the evening? Charlie Askew not making it. He was the contestant who had more to him than just the novelty aspect. And, with his crying jag Wednesday, I really thought he would at least score sympathy points to squeak on through.

We now know the players in the game. There have been words to the effect this is a really high talent group of individuals. I agree … especially for the gals. The guys? They have their moments, but they’re few and far between.

Let’s see what the rest of the season holds in store for us …
