Land Ho! is a lovely little movie about two older men on vacation

land ho

‘Land Ho!’ is a slow but nice indie movie about the most exotic adventure two old friends have ever had.

I predicted a few years ago that we’d see more and more movies about people in their twilight years, and I was right. Of course, that’s not to say they will be mainstream blockbusters, because that’s not where “the money” is, but there’s still that voice out there. Getting older, thinking about your past and your past mistakes, these are things really anyone can relate to, but especially so the older you get. One theme that is certainly universal is that the older you get, the more you could wonder about your past because there’s more of it to think about.

Another is that there’s often a feeling, a desire, or perhaps a drive to escape the boring or humdrum nature of everyday life and experience a different place. There’s a feeling that if you just see how it is “elsewhere” or in a place that is “exotic” that your entire world may be changed. That your future could be forever altered, changed from mundane to marvel. Or maybe it offers a brief look at how other people live and just simply expand our horizons. There’s something there about film too, a medium that can also transport you elsewhere, but maybe that’s not the point here.

Television’s Gotham is finally upon us

gotham

Are you ready for ‘Gotham?’ Warner Bros. showcase series about the rise of Jim Gordon and the origins of some of Batman’s most popular villains? To whet your appetite here is a trio of videos of some of its stars from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

It’s been a couple of months since Comic-Con but we’re finally within reach of one of the most anticipated shows of the new television season: Gotham. The series, if you don’t know, tells of the story of a young Jim Gordon and his experiences and rise in the ranks of Gotham’s police force along with origin stories of many Batman villains. (It premieres this Monday on FOX.)

I got the opportunity to sit in at a filled-to-capacity press room with many of the notables in the freshman series.

And when I say filled to capacity, I’m not talkin’ turkey. I was one of the last media members allowed in the room; quite a bit of jostling was needed to accommodate the better part of the last dozen of us who squeezed in. Seating at the tables was tighter than tight — we were practically in each others’ laps. You cozyed up to your seatmate quickly and introduced yourself kindly so you could set up your recording equipment or you were out of luck. Real estate was at a premium.

But it was worth it in the end, even though not all the series’ stars in attendance were able to make each table (stars Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Erin Richards and Jada Pinkett Smith as well as executive producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon) but our table did host , Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle), Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot), and David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne) — his video is coming soon. This Is Where I Leave You leaves no cliché unturned

_D5A8187.DNG

‘This Is Where I Leave You’ strands some good actors in a sea of clichés, but the performances just may be enough to elevate it beyond a TV Movie of the Week.

Family dynamics are a crazy thing. Most families get along, or at least pretend to get along during holidays and special gatherings, and others just can’t be in the same room together without some unfortunate event taking place.

The Altman family, from the new comedy-drama This Is Where I Leave You, falls squarely into that second category. Oldest son Paul (Cory Stoll) feels like the “responsible” son who took control of the family business while his younger brothers fled their hometown. Middle son Judd (Jason Bateman) seems to have a successful career and marriage … on the surface, and youngest son Phillip (Adam Driver) is seen as the irresponsible one who is now dating a much older woman. Then there’s sister Wendy (Tina Fey) who seems more like a mother to them all than their actual mother.

The Maze Runner is a surprisingly engaging entry into the dystopian teen genre

maze-runner-MR-339crp_rgb

‘The Maze Runner’ is a pretty enjoyable movie, even if the ending is a bit … franchisey.

Ah, the copycat movie. Or copycat book, as the case may be. When there is something popular with readymade sequels (like The Hunger Games or Harry Potter) there’s a rush to discover what the secret formula there was for the success. Was it sexy teens? Dark, brooding settings? Not entirely thought out sci-fi dystopia? There is of course no such perfect formula, but that doesn’t stop moviemakers from trying. The young adult dystopian genre has had its true successes, but also its failures — look at this year’s flop Divergent. That was nearly identical to the Hunger Games concept, but it didn’t draw the numbers. Why? Well, for one, the book wasn’t anywhere close to as popular. It also just seemed to be marketed as yet another in a stream of such genre stories and therefore didn’t really stand out. Something like The LEGO Movie, you remember that. But the same could be said for the unending mindless action movies, which also do not have guaranteed success. For every pandering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doing well, there’s The Expendables 3 bombing utterly and completely. So today’s question becomes: Will this movie break the streak of failure?
