Free passes to attend a special screening of The Hornet’s Nest in DC

CliqueClack has partnered with Freestyle Releasing to give readers in the Washington D.C. area an opportunity to attend a special screening of the new documentary The Hornet’s Nest.

The Hornet’s Nest follows Mike and Carlos Boettcher’s struggle to reconnect. After years of separation, they become the only father and son journalist team to embed with American Troops on the front lines in Afghanistan. These heart pounding missions soon become a fight for survival for Father, Son, the Soldiers, and Marines in the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan.

Belle is a masterful historical drama

The United States has a sad history of slavery and racial prejudice, and while we have dealt with our own shame over the subject it’s easy to forget that the US was not the only country engaged in buying humans to put to work. And we rarely stop to think about how those unfortunate souls got here in the first place.

The new historical drama Belle gives us a bit of a history lesson on the British role in the Atlantic Slave Trade, and how that role changed thanks in part to a young black woman by the name of Dido Elizabeth Belle Lindsay. Dido was actually mixed race, her father being an Admiral in the British navy and her mother a slave.

Upon the death of her mother, Lindsay took Dido to live with with uncle Lord Mansfield while he was sent off to sea (unfortunately never to return). Dido’s presence was met with some resistance in the household but she was eventually accepted as part of the family. That is until company came for dinner and Dido was forced to eat alone. Her position in society (because of her skin color) was not high enough to dine with guests, but too high to dine with the household slaves.

Godzilla attempts to stomp his way back into our hearts

When you’re of a certain age and you hear a movie is being made of either one of you favorite classic TV shows or one of your favorite classic movies, you think one of two things – “This is going to suck” or “This is going to be awesome!” When you finally begin to see teasers and trailers that just hint at the movie’s awesomeness, you set yourself some impossibly high expectations for what the full movie will be.

And that is the situation many Godzilla fans may find themselves in when the newly updated, revived and rebooted Godzilla stomps into theaters on May 16. The teasers, the trailers and the TV ads have done their job very well, heavily featuring Bryan Cranston and fleeting glimpses of the big guy and something else big. But the trailers are also a bit misleading, making it seem like Cranston is on some kind of quest to uncover a large government conspiracy that leads to the reveal of Godzilla (and I do love the fact that Ken Watanabe’s character refers to him as Gojira). That is Cranston’s role in the film, but it turns out to not be as big a part of the story as expected.

What the story turns out to be is a son’s (Ford Brody, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) journey to honor his father (Cranston), whom he always thought was just a guy who went a little nuts after his wife died (Juliette Binoche bites it very early in the proceedings), and then to get back to his own wife and son before Godzilla flattens San Francisco. Luckily, he’s an Army bomb technician who is always in the right place at the right time.

The CW’s fall schedule in a Flash

The last of the major networks revealed its new fall schedule, and looking at The CW’s plans it seems that not a whole lot is changing, at least on Wednesday and Thursday. Of all the broadcast networks, The CW had probably the most successful fall launch last year with only The Tomorrow People getting the ax from the new batch of shows introduced in 2013. Of the returning shows, Nikita and The Carrie Diaries did not make the 2014 fall cut, and of the new shows introduced mid-season, Star-Crossed will not be around come fall. CBS benches and reshuffles shows to make room for football

CBS has announced its fall schedule, and with the network having the most returning new shows from the previous season, they really didn’t have too much to change. Until the network acquired Thursday Night Football and spin-offs from the popular CSI and NCIS franchises. In fact, a good portion of their returning programs are benched until football ends its run.

With the Thursday schedule disrupted and the new additions taking old favorites’ time slots, The Mentalist, Mike & Molly, Undercover Boss, and newcomers Battle Creek and The Odd Couple won’t be seen until 2015. Other shows like The Amazing Race and The Big Bang Theory are moving to make room for the new additions. CBS’ biggest change is the end of its 2-hour Monday comedy block, something that’s been in place since 1986! The 9 PM hour now belongs to new thriller Scorpion while the troubled 10 PM spot hopefully gets a boost from NCIS: Los Angeles.

ABC’s fall schedule includes a full night of Shonda Rhimes

ABC held its own version of Game of Thrones‘ Red Wedding when network execs went on a cancellation spree, giving the ax to fan and critical faves like Trophy Wife, The Neighbors, and Suburgatory, as well as Mixology, Super Fun Night, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Mind Games, Killer Women and Betrayal. In the end, one queen reigned supreme as ABC turns over an entire night to hit-maker Shonda Rhimes.

ABC has a lot to prove in the fall as it currently stands as the fourth place network. A night of programming from Rhimes makes sense as ABC can use the night as a launching pad to move any of those around to plug in a hole if needed and launch a new Rhimes-produced show in the vacant slot. And, let’s face it, how much longer can Grey’s Anatomy run? ABC will have to plan for that eventuality and giving Rhimes a night of her own and a long-term contract is probably the best move the network has made.

Fox fall schedule is notable for its omissions

The Fox television network unveiled its 2014 fall schedule and gave us a peek into what 2015 has in store as well. Fox had previously announced its new series acquisitions — Gotham, Red Band Society, Mulaney, Gracepoint, Utopia, Backstrom, Empire, Hieroglyph, Wayward Pines, Bordertown, The Last Man on Earth, Weird Loners — but many of them won’t be seen until 2015.

With the absence of The X Factor, and American Idol not returning until 2015 (with a shorter schedule than usual at about 37 hours instead of 50), that has freed up some time to debut some new shows in the fall. One glaring omission from the schedule is Glee, which has also been benched until 2015 and its 22-episode order may be trimmed to as little as 13. The plan is to run the final season without any breaks and to wrap up the story the best way possible. Another big change for the network is the break-up of Sunday’s Animation Domination block with only Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons and Family Guy still on the schedule (American Dad moves to TBS, The Cleveland Show is cancelled). One of this season’s bright spots, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will occupy the spot after The Simpson and newcomer Mulaney, starring John Mulaney and Martin Short, moves into the post Family Guy time slot.
