Some pondering on The Walking Dead season 3
It seems like forever, but all of a sudden season three of ‘The Walking Dead’ is within our purview. Going into the new chapter, I have a few thoughts.
Rick: Where does Rick go from here? As leader of the group, he’s been through the ringer. From originally losing his family to almost losing his son to killing Shane and more, he’s questioned and second guessed himself time and again. And there’ll be plenty more where that came from. I’m interested in seeing where the Rick/Lori dynamic goes, especially given Lori’s obvious retraction from her husband in light of his confessions in “Beside The Dying Fire.” There’s a crapload of conflict going on there. Maybe nothing will come of it, Lori will forgive him and they’ll simply move on, but I believe Rick’s laid a new foundation with her that could change things drastically … or at least in as much that Lori looks at him in a different light.
I’m getting ahead of myself, but here’s a scenario: What if down the line, when all is said and done, Rick is the last surviving member of the group? What if he’s the last of mankind in his neck of the woods? Would he have the gumption to continue on and seek out others? Or would he simply succumb to his supposed eventual fate? Better question: What if Lori found herself in the same position? No one else around, everyone is gone, decimated by the world and its inhabitants with fate cruelly leaving her for the last? One more: What if there is a cure and either Lori or Rick are still alive to struggle on to find someone to put it to proper use? Do either of them continue?
And then there’s Daryl: The inner turmoil and conflict that’s been building within him over the last couple episodes is really going to come to a head when he reunites with big brother Merle, whenever that might be. And we know Merle will be up to no good, only looking out for himself. Does Daryl side with the group given the history they’ve shared? Or do the familial ties supersede all that’s come before with Rick and company? Merle’s kin, but he’s cut from a different cloth than Daryl, there’s no doubt about that. Regardless, there will be a showdown.
For those who know the comic series, we’ve already seen differences in the previews concerning two of the new characters coming on board, Michonne and The Governor. Discovering who they are and what they’re all about is going to be fulfilling rather quickly, I’m sure.
Plus we’re heading into The Prison storyline from the books, arguably the most popular of the series. And, with the showrunner anxious to see it laid before the fans (“You’re going to see some things you’re not expecting”), there’s little doubt it’s going to be jarringly good. No spoilers here, but, going forward, there are lots of aspects of the books I’m interested in seeing get interpreted. And Glen himself has said there are surprises in store.
Invariably, there are going to be plenty of twists and turns we won’t be privy to until they’re presented on screen in all their shocking glory. And, really: Isn’t that all we’re asking for?
Meanwhile, I’m going to make certain I have my Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Ice Cream at the ready for 9:00 p.m. Sunday night when the premiere I’ve been waiting for since March unfolds.
