CliqueClack has partnered with IFC Films and Allied Integrated Marketing to offer our readers in Washington, D.C. a chance to attend the advance screening of the new drama The Reluctant Fundamentalist before anyone else. The film stars Riz Ahmed, Liev Schreiber, Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland and Martin Donovan.

At an outdoor café in 2011, a Pakistani man named Changez (Ahmed) tells Bobby (Schreiber), an American journalist, about his experiences in the United States. Roll back ten years, and we find a younger Changez fresh from Princeton, seeking fortune and glory on Wall Street. The American Dream seems well within his grasp, complete with a smart and gorgeous artist girlfriend, Erica (Hudson). But when the Twin Towers are attacked, a cultural divide slowly begins to crack open between Changez and Erica. Changez’s dream soon begins to slip into nightmare: profiled, wrongfully arrested, strip-searched and interrogated, he is transformed from a well-educated, upwardly mobile businessman to a scapegoat and perceived enemy. With time, he begins to hear the call of his own homeland. Taking us through the culturally rich and beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a story about conflicting ideologies where perception and suspicion have the power to determine life or death.

The screening will take place on Monday, April 29, 7:00 PM at the Landmark E Street Cinema. 1. I would like to see this movie as it seeks to tell the story not really about the 9/11 attacks, but how one man’s life is transformed because of that day’s events, bringing a fresh perspective and ideas to a general idea/plot that has already been told in other movies. Thank you Clique Clack!

  2. Sounds like an interesting movie, very relevant to what;s happening lately, around the wold, esp. in the US !

  3. This movie is sparking an important discussion about American xenophobia in a post 9/11 world, and I’m really excited to see the movie and be a part of the discussion.

  4. I’d love to see this film as I’ve been told that it quite vivdly captures some of the xenophobia experienced by people of Middle Eastern/South Asian backgrounds in a post 9/11 America.

  5. I would like to see this movie because it sounds like a great portrayal of how 9/11 impacted an intelligent man trying to live the American dream and the struggles we had to overcome.

  6. We’ve engaged in discussions on treating the symptoms of terrorism–but what about looking deeper at the root causes? This movie may shed some light on that, and for that, I’d love to see the film as well!

  7. I’d love to see the movie since it appears to capture the experience of the faceless victims of the 9/11 aftermath; I’d like to gain a better understanding of that perspective. I also think its important to gain insight into what the possible motivations are for individuals like the protagonist in the movie.

  8. This film looks to be engaging and thought provoking.

  9. This movie sounds like it will provide a fresh prospective on how events are viewed from another side.

  10. I love the independent films that they show at the Landmark, and I’m sure this is another good one.

  11. This is an interesting movie, very relevant to what;s happening lately, around the wold, esp. in the United States !

  12. I want to see this movie because the plot seems like it will be very intriguing!

  13. In the wake of recent events, there isn’t a more topical, powerful, or relevant film this summer. Forget super heroes and aliens, let me sit back with a thought provoking humanist drama like The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Count me in!!!

  14. It sounds refreshingly smart and complex, especially since we’re entering the summer blockbuster season.

  15. I read this book a few years ago and it blew me away. When I discovered its been made into a movie, I was thrilled to bits! Would love to see the book coming to life and also if the director has done justice to it.

  16. This movie gives a unique perspective. I have also read the book

  17. Very interested in see this movie, because it off the break peaked my curiousity. Current taking a sociology class and would love to see this movie from the fundamentalist perspective.

  18. As an amateur critic, I’m always glad of the opportunity to see a film early to get a jump on reviewing it. This film, in particular, looks to be an interesting new entry in an ongoing dialogue about the origins of radicalism. It is in understanding the forces that give rise to this behavior that we will be able to avoid repeating it.

  19. I am more than interested to watch this movie. It sparks my curiosity on the unraveling of the points of this movie. It seems to point out the many situations that we are experience today and would love to see the unraveling of this movie.

  20. Being African American formerly married to a Morrocan Muslim, I watched him and his brother go through alot of nasty looks, threats and so much malicious behavior from people that didn’t know him that he and his brother almost moved back to Morroco. I want to see the transition and what the outcome of this transition is.

  21. I read the Reluctant Fundamentalist a few ago, enjoyed it. If I am selected to view the screening, it would be interesting
to see how much “liberties” director Mira Nair takes.

    • I wanted to see what liberties would be taken in bringing the Reluctant Fundamentalist novel to the big screen. Surprise, the only similarities to the novel are the characters Changez(Riz) and Erica(Kate Hudson), who in the novel was a
writer, later was committed to a mental institution. This is the story of Changez, a Pakistani, who graduates from Princeton, lands a great job in New York and starts enjoying the good life. September 11th, his world and the United States changed. Although he claims to love America, while watching the fall of the twin towers broadcast, a slight smiles crosses his face because the mighty America is not so mighty after all. America paranoia sets in and anyone looking like a Muslim is looked upon as the enemy. After being stopped at the airport, detained and stripped search among other things, Changez philosophy changes. He quits his job and returns to his homeland. After becoming a professor his views had changed and his anti-American teaching reflected his new ideologies. Rounding out the cast is Kiefer Southerland(Jim Cross), who hires Changez at the firm of Underwood Samson. and Liev Schreiber(Bobby Lincoln) a CIA operative posing as a journalist. Put The Reluctant Fundamentalist on you must see list.

  22. I am a book and movie critic for Pakistani newspaper DAWN. In 2007 I reviewed the novel “Reluctant Fundamentalist” for Dawn’s Books and Author’s Sunday edition titled “An Evening with Mohsin Hamid.” I interviewed the author when he was in DC.
I would very much like to see the Movie by Mira Nair and possibly review it for
Dawn and other Pakistani and Indian publications.
