Syfy Upfronts 2013 – Adam Copeland talks Haven’s fourth season

Adam Copeland - SyFy Upfronts

Talking to Adam “The Edge” Copeland at the Syfy Upfronts, I left with an utter crush. I know, when don’t I? However, like his character, he’s definitely a gentle giant and a fan of ‘Haven.’

I’m crushing because he’s a fan like the rest of us.

So while I crush on Adam Copeland for his height (Dude is hella tall and I’m practically Amazonian), his amazing Crest-worthy smile and his dapper slate gray suit, it’s  also because he’s a fan like the rest of us. And, like most actors, dude is hella charming. He smiles when people smile at him and tilts his head when the interviewer does likewise. It creates a great feeling of synchronicity.

Because he detailed his enjoyment working with Richard Donat and John Dunsworth, I expected to see a reaction from his character upon discovering one of the two people he worked with had betrayed him. So, I asked about his character’s relationship with the Teagues (played by Richard and John), his thoughts on his character’s daughter’s death and his season four hopes. Take a listen to the audio file, but bump up the sound. Towards the end of the interviews, the party and purple carpet happenings had increased ten-fold.  Or, read the partial transcript below.

What’s going to happen for the next season?
I know as much as anybody else. That’s kinda the way I’ve always done things. I know so much can change. But, I am looking forward to exposing more layers to the character Dwight. There are so many questions answered in the last episode and the season. But then so many raised right after they’re all answered. I was like “this is genius. I love this.” We were shooting the barn scene and I was standing there watching going “oh no!” [Note: Imagine the “I love this” and “oh no” facial expressions magnified by ten.]

With one of the Teagues brothers revealing himself as the Guard head, how will that affect your relationship with him?
Dwight still blames the Guard for his daughter dying. I think that’s pivotal for the character Dwight. If I have an enemy now, in my mind, that’s gotta be that guy. It’ll be interesting if the writers go in that direction or if they go around it another way. I’m intrigued to find out.

I noticed they mentioned your daughter again in the last two episodes and I wondered if that’d come up again in season four.
I think it has to. That’s where you first start to see the layers to Dwight. I think the character Dwight seems like a stand up guy. When he’s dealing with Duke he’ll fight fire with fire. I think generally he’s a good guy who just wants to do what’s best. That just adds a sympathetic layer that you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a guy like that. What I always encounter is people always want me to play the bodyguard that beats everyone up. What I really enjoy about Dwight is that he’s not that guy. He can, but there’s tenderness. That was fun for me to get across, because I didn’t think I could.

What would you like to see in season four?
What is the barn? What happens when people come out of the barn? What about the people who are left? How does that all play out? I’ve always said it’d be fun to show Dwight having an evil side because now after three seasons with that character I think it’s fairly ingrained in people that he’s the stand up guy. It’s nice to go in directions that I’ve never done before.
