(Season 3, Episode 1 – Season Premiere)
I love Dexter … the show, not the guy. Alright, maybe there’s a little bit of man crush in there, but that’s beside the point. Though I love this show, season-to-season, there’s one thing that’s bugged me about it. And here again, in this new season, I think I can predict what’s going to happen. I hate when that happens.
My dilemma here is that I can’t really tell you what I think is going to happen, since I’ve already seen the first four episodes and, by saying what I think is going to happen, you’ll be spoiled into possibly knowing a bit about what’s going to happen in those four episodes. I’m sure I’ve confused the hell out of you enough now, so let’s move on.
After last season, with Dexter so close to being caught, I wondered how they would one-up those tense moments this season. Every time Dexter makes a mistake, I feel it in the pit of my stomach, that he’s going to get his ass caught. How messed up is that? That someone could feel worry for a serial killer? Or a fictional character, for that matter.
The new guy at the station, Quinn, has got me really wondering. There’s something really off going on there, but I’m not so sure it’s an Internal Affairs issue at hand. My first thought was that this supposed IA agent is actually an ex-fling of Quinn’s, trying to get back at him somehow. He certainly seems to have lady-charming high up on his resume, even though Deb seems to not be falling for it.
Anton is the other new man in Deb’s life, who seems to be on his way into the empty spot in Deb’s bed sooner than Quinn. Maybe neither will, maybe they both will. Let’s just hope that, if it’s the latter, it’s not at the same time.
Speaking filling beds, I’d be amiss if I didn’t mention the scenes with Rita and Dexter. I had no idea Julie Benz was so open to showing herself off, nearly completely. I’ll remember these scenes come Thanksgiving, when I’m remembering my gifts from the past year. I hope the others at the table will be understanding. Oh hell, of course they will — it was Julie Benz for godsakes!
I’ll follow up next time with some thoughts on how I feel this show is continuing on the path of predictability. Yes, the predictability bugs me, but somehow it doesn’t lessen my enjoyment of the show.
