Another day, another show canceled. Guess that’s the way things go in Hollywood. Today it was The Riches, FX’s drama about a con artist family. Reports today say that the show is kaput. I was a viewer of the show, but honestly, I’m a little ambivalent about this news. The show was OK, never attaining the greatness that this cast and premise deserved. Too often the show was about how screwed up these people were, when I had always hoped we would get to see them pull off some interesting cons on rich, unsuspecting rubes.
Minnie Driver was excellent in this show, even garnering an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination this year. I think Eddie Izzard was equally as good (even if his American accent was NOT). Hopefully these two worthy actors will land on their feet and find a new series to showcase their talents.
I’m always disappointed when one of the shows that I watch gets canceled, because, frankly, there just aren’t that many good shows on TV these days. Sometimes a show that’s just OK looks excellent in comparison to the reality swill that seems to be everywhere. Unfortunately, I think the writer’s strike had a little hand in this as well, as the second season was only 7 episodes long and really suffered because of it. Guess 7 wasn’t a lucky number here, was it…?
Anyone heartbroken by this news? What kind of show do you think would be right for some of the newly unemployed cast? Any big questions left that you’re going to be obsessing over?
I watched this show, but the second season wasn’t as much fun as the first. Had this news been reported after the first season I’d have been more upset about it than I am now. I’ll miss “The Riches”, but probably not for long unfortunately.
Well, crap! I actually like this show a lot. I also was probably the only person to comment on it over at “TV Squad”. Disappointing :(
crap!
What a small deal this really is! This show was the weakest link in the fx chain and i am glad it is gone. The show was overwrought, maudlin, and the overarching plot was not that intertesting. I have to say that the only interesting character was the neighbor who had the gay husband, and I am hoping that actress lands on her feet.
Oh c’mon, Dirt was the weakest link in the FX chain. I liked this show, and agree that the short season did it in. I loved seeing them pull the cons too. I thought the kids on that show were awesome..and I will miss them all!
I agree with u 100%.
I disagree with you about Dirt because that show wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, it was junk food TV, whereas this was meant to be “quality TV.” Tonally, the show was dark, moody, and sullen. It took itself way too seriously and it wasn’t my personal taste. After being spoiled by The Shield, Rescue Me, Damages, etc, this show completely fell flat and deserved to be cancelled.
Maybe they’ll start up an internet business somewhere along the line and strike it rich..lol
