One of the best things about the beginning of House, season five, was that cool private investigator that House hired to do his dirty work. I’ve been loving the last few episodes of House, so I didn’t realize that I missed him until it suddenly dawned on me out of the blue: Michael Weston, where’d you go?
More accurately, Lucas Douglas, played by Michael Weston (not to be confused with Jeffrey Donovan’s character on Burn Notice, Michael Westen; follow along …) – where are you? You are missed! From the moment we met the P.I., posing as a toaster oven repairman in the doctor’s lounge in episode two, “Not Cancer,” he had a fun and unique personality.
In fact, I remember thinking, how can this guy come out of nowhere and have a better personality that the new team members we’ve known for over a year? I do actually feel they’ve been remedying that situation in the last two episodes. I’m really enjoying the spunky Taub and the multi-dimensional Kutner. They’ve got a long way to go, but I appreciate the start.
But back to the issue at hand … I loved that little P.I., and I miss him. He could nearly one-up House, which made him intriguing and fun all at the same time, and it was nice to see House buddying up with someone new. I know he disappeared when Wilson decided to be House’s friend again, but I am not sure he had worn out his welcome.
So let’s see … how could we fit Lucas into the current storyline? A love interest for Thirteen? Nah, she’s mashing with Foreman now, and I rather like that pair up. Think he could shake things up for Cameron and Chase? I might be onto something there ….
What do you think? Did you like this character as much as I did?
I remember hearing somewhere that he was originally brought onto the show to introduce him for a spinoff, but I think those plans got shelved.
IIRC, the P.I. is the main character for the House ‘spin-off’ that FOX and NBC Universal are developing. After seeing him in these House episodes, I’m looking forward to the ‘spin-off'; I just hope he isn’t the only interesting character in that new show.
But, that said, I don’t really see a larger role for this character on House. Why should a P.I. hang around in a hospital or with House? It made sense for the House/Wilson-breakup-story-arc, but what would they use him for next?
I think a new show for this character would be the way to go, let’s just wait and see if enough people liked him for FOX to give the green light…Would be nice to pair these two shows up , ‘House, M.D.’ followed by ‘Douglas, P.I.’…:-)
EDIT: Bob typed faster…
That’s so funny, I thought about the exact same thing, literally, the exact same way, just yesterday. I looked Weston up on IMDB and looked for info about the spinoff and everything, but couldn’t find zip. :(
The spinoff was canceled.
The spinoff was a possibility but has since been shelved.
Wow. Fox is cancelling shows before they even write and shoot the pilots now. That must be a new world record.
Ditto.
Thought the exact same thing while watching this week’s house. Because the P.I. was the first new character that had no chance in hell of getting a love interest.
Seems all this show really cares about is setting up flings. It’s more and more getting an alternative version of “October Road” and it really starts to induce vomit reflexes in me…
