See Jane Clack – Sookie Stackhouse, Walter Bishop and Owen Hunt

trueblood_0107

This week’s edition of See Jane Clack features my favorite characters of the Fall 2008 TV season. While some new shows tanked out of the starting gate, a few great new characters emerged, as well. My favorites:

Sookie Stackhouse. The spunky waitress in HBO’s True Blood has guts to spare! Even though you know she’s scared stiff, this girl pushes through her fear and does what most of us would cringe from: fall in love with a vampire, go to the nearby vampire bar, and wander around at night with all sorts of supernatural creatures lurking. Most of all, she lives in the house where her grandmother was murdered and she had to clean up all that blood (week after week, it seems). I want to be Sookie Stackhouse when I grow up.

Walter Bishop. Officially my new favorite mad scientist, Walter lives in his own world and likes it there on Fox’s Fringe. While the rest of the world frets over cylinders and patterns, Walter calmly proclaims through his hazmat suit that he’d like a bowl of that onion soup. Or a piece of gum or a rootbeer float or whatever his current obsession is. Yet behind the man-child persona lies a genius who builds time machines and sees into peoples’ brains. You just stay in your world, Walter. It’s nice there.

Griffin Bell. I didn’t think much of the new head honcho on Lipstick Jungle when he arrived on the scene -– especially since I loved James Lesure on Las Vegas and had high hopes for his character. Well, it took a few episodes to make me love him, but now when Griffin looks into Nico’s eyes, I go all weak in the knees. He really has a thing for the girl, a passion to take care of her, even though she says she doesn’t need taking care of. As Val Kilmer said in Tombstone,” I beg to diffah,” and Griffin is the man to do it.

Ben Cendars. As the maniacal music producer on Starz’ Crash, nobody does crazy like Dennis Hopper. Whether he’s throwing a pan of scrambled eggs across the room, visiting his shaman in the desert, or trading barbs with his daughter, this character is fun, fun, fun til his driver takes the T-Bird away. And he’s got some of the best lines on the tube right now, like “I AM the grim reaper!” and “I’m certifiably crazy.” That’s just fine, Ben. I wouldn’t want you to come to your senses anytime soon.

Dr. Owen Hunt. Grey’s Anatomy needed someone to shake things up, and they got it good in Kevin McKidd’s military doc. Major McBadass pulls no punches and cuts right to the core of things. He also has a habit of grabbing Cristina any and everywhere and kissing her with a sense of urgency to rival all urgencies. But my favorite kissing scene was when he led her into the bowels of the hospital and planted one on her while a zesty steam rose all around them. Now THAT’s a kiss!

What about you? Who are your favorite characters of the fall season?
