Psych stepped up the laughs for me this week

psych-usa-networkI always laugh out loud at least several times while watching an episode of Psych. It’s not Shawn’s crazy psychic antics, or even Gus’s straight man act. Well, OK, sometimes it’s Gus. More often than not, though, the laughs for me are:

  • One-liner ’80s pop culture references
  • Shawn’s dad and their interactions
  • The situations the boys get themselves into

This week, for instance, the whole firefighter thing hit a funny bone for me. Maybe it’s because I have a four-year-old who’d live at our town’s fire station if he were offered the chance (his only disappointment is that there are stairs instead of a pole), but more than likely, it was because Shawn and Gus got to fulfill a dream of theirs, a dream every little kid has … to be a firefighter.

Shawn’s at his best when childlike, and watching the glee as he ran the drills in full firefighter regalia was pure viewer bliss. The pole, the fire dog, even remembering Firefighter Paul from their childhood … and of course Henry’s not-so-subtle hints that firefighters are inferior to police officers.

The episode was also full of the one-lined zingers, some of which Brett mentioned in his review of “Earth, Wind, and … Wait for It.” When the one-liners come together with the classic situation and you insert Henry, you’ve got the perfect recipe for Friday night laughs. Over on USA, that is.
