Reaper – Sam has a brother!

And I don’t mean Kyle. It would seem that Kyle has been effectively “Chuck”ed at this point. No, this week Sam came face to face with Morgan, son of the Devil. To call it a joyous family reunion would be wildly optimistic. Morgan is the anti-Sam, and that really rubs Sam the wrong way. If a little more crazy Oliver genealogy wasn’t enough, everyone else got to play this week as well. Ben dealt with his ‘women’s books’ issues with Nina. Andi put the kibosh on Sock’s latest scam, while bringing Ted back into the ‘Bench family. And then there was that bit at the end, which probably belongs after the jump.

Ok, Sam and Morgan. Thoughts? I like him. Not in the way that Sock and Ben were fawning over him, despite their best efforts to resist. More for what he brings to the Sam and Jerry dynamic. If we’ve learned anything so far, it’s that Jerry loves to play games with Sam. Morgan is another fantastic tool in that arsenal. Thousands of dollars, a Maserati, a vacation on a tropical island, all more thorns in Sam’s side. There was the hint that it all went a little deeper than that, with Jerry suggesting that, “Maybe Morgan isn’t the one I should be priming.” But that also falls right in with the idea of screwing with Sam. The idea of being at the Devil’s right hand couldn’t be more opposite of what Sam desires.

Elsewhere, Andi and Sock, round two. You have to admire Sock’s creativity, even if you question his ability to think things through. I can’t really see an instance where he’s ever going to win against Andi, but I’ll be happy to watch him try. The best part of their latest tangle is the return of Ted. Andi being in charge at the ‘Bench is working out well enough, but I wouldn’t mind seeing her out and about a little more, on the soul capturing missions, now that she knows everything. Well, almost everything.

Then we had Ben & Nina. Her behavior this week, and the revelation about her previous time with humans, does fly in the face of her fish out of water introduction last week, but I’m ok with it. Their part of the story made for two of my favorite bits. First, the food exchange: “How’s demon food different?” “Usually, it’s still squirming, or screaming.” And second, the so uncomfortable offer from Gladys to school Ben on the ways of demon/human pleasure, which ended with, “I like to make learning fun, so bring along plenty of plastic garbage bags.”

The soul of the week was quite possibly the weakest the show has had, but it really didn’t matter. There were so many other things going on that all it really needed to do was provide a backdrop for Sam and Morgan to square off. And that gets us to the big scene at the end. Did you immediately think, “Pa Oliver is still alive.” when you heard that Sam’s mother had ordered a large freezer? I have no idea where we are headed with that, but it will be nice to get back to that part of the story.
