I was torn between that title, and “Look at Nina in the bra and panties!” I decided to take the high road. CliqueClack is a civilized place and all that. But still, how ’bout that Nina? Right? That’s getting us off track, though. While Jenny Wade in her underthings was the flashy highlight that they would lead SportsCenter with, if it covered TV instead of silly things like hockey 1, the real story was Sam’s declaration of war against the devil. And if that wasn’t enough, there was finally a reason for Mr. Oliver to be hanging out in the garage all this time.
In my TV world, pretty girls in panties do trump most things, so let’s start with Ben and Nina. I was a little cross earlier in the season about the unfortunate disappearance of Josie, but Nina has mended that particular fence. Her relationship with Ben is just bizarre, but in that oh so good way. She’s just so far out there that you can’t help wanting to see more of her. She made good on her threats to torment Ben. And Sock, as ever, got that line between bravery and stupidity all mixed up. It really seemed like a bad idea from the moment he told Ben his plan. That made me totally buy in to the ‘heart wrenching’ dream sequence. I think it’s safe to say that Ben and Nina are in it for the long haul (the season) now, and that is a very good thing.
Getting to Sam, it was another unconventional assignment this week that had me guessing wrong again and again. From the moment he arrived at Sally’s mansion I was convinced it was all a setup. After dispatching Alan back to hell, it seemed likely that Jerry would want to smack Sam back in line. I was completely dismissing the idea that he would actually get any secrets out of Sally. As Sam fumbled through his ‘seduction,’ I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. After that failed to materialize, the gun threw up all kinds of flags. What an odd choice for a vessel. I almost had myself convinced that Sally wasn’t an escaped soul, and the gun wasn’t a vessel. Alas, that might be a little too far out there to work with the tone of Reaper. In the end it was all just a ploy to help Jerry get lucky; because he’s the Devil, he doesn’t chase tail. Tail chases him.
More interesting as we move forward toward the end of the season is the coming showdown between Sam and Jerry. After last week, I thought Alan’s role in all of that had played out. As Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast, my friend.” Mr. Oliver just might have something to say about that. And that is a very welcome turn of events. I haven’t been big on any of the Mr. O. stuff since he returned. It just didn’t seem to carry any weight, especially given the dramatic end to the first season. Thankfully, it’s all paid off now. I really like the idea of Mr. O. being the inside man in Hell, where, apparently, Sprint has fantastic coverage. Things are building nicely towards what promises to be an exciting finish to the ‘season’ 2.
Finally, just because…
