G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Season 1.1 – A review and, hey, a giveaway!

G.I. Joe title screen

I was a cartoon watching freak when I was a kid, especially in the early-to-mid ’80s. Two series that stick out in my mind during that time are Transformers and G.I. Joe. It’s not just the cartoons that bring back so many memories of that time. The PSAs. The toys. There was a huge culture around these shows, and there had been nothing like it since the days of when Star Wars action figures were in their prime.

When I saw that Shout! Factory was releasing the first mini-series that started it all — G.I. Joe: An American Hero — I couldn’t believe it hadn’t been released yet. I had to know: does this show stand up to the test of time? Would watching the episodes bring back those memories of my childhood? Do the DVDs include the PSAs?

The odd thing about this DVD set is that the studio decided to release the first season in multiple parts, presumably two. This is only the first of those sets, which includes what’s definitely the first three mini-series of the show: A Real American Hero, The Revenge of Cobra, and The Pyramid of Darkness. There’s also a fourth DVD with additional episodes that may or may not be part of that third mini-series, though in total there are 22 episodes.

None of the episodes contain commentary, though there’s a three-part interview with writer Ron Friedman that’s pretty interesting, but short. You have to watch it in three parts, one each on the first three DVDs. At first I thought it was odd that the episodes kept the commercial breaks in — “G.I. Joe will return after these messages” and “we now return to G.I. Joe” — but I actually liked that; it gave that added touch in bringing back childhood memories, when I’d run off to grab another ice-cold coke from the fridge.

The other extras are another treasure. You get a handful of the famous PSA commercial spots as well as some of the toy commercials! Holy cow, did those bring back memories. There’s got to be a lot more of them for any additional DVD sets of the series, but I remembered each one of those included on this set vividly. There’s also a printable script of one of the episodes on the fourth disc and some rub-on tattoos thrown into the box, if you care about that sort of thing.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Season 1.1 is available in stores today. However, I’ve got three copies to give away to three random commenters below. All you need to do is tell me which G.I. Joe character is/was your favorite . That’s it! Just leave the comment by next Friday, July 31, at 5 PM ET. We’ll pick three winners completely at random, and alert the winners after the contest ends. Only one entry per person, and you must have a valid U.S.-based mailing address. Not following these guidelines voids your entry. Now you know.

And knowing is half the battle.

Gotta go Cobra Commander!

July 24, 2009 at 1:13 PM

either Zartan and his Dreadnauts or Serpentor

July 24, 2009 at 1:27 PM

Honestly I did not watch it that closely. My husband though is a geek for it and he loved everyone in the series. The other day we went to see the new Harry Potter movie and my 9 year old daughter saw the trailer for the new movie coming out and went wild. Of course my husband looked at me, grinned, and said that’s my girl!

July 24, 2009 at 1:44 PM

I always liked Shipwreck he had an interesting mix of humor and character.

July 24, 2009 at 1:48 PM

The Dreadnoks were all cool because they were all Racial Stereotypes of Southerners but if I had to choose one Joe it would be Bazooka He had the coolest costume (football jersey and army helmet), he was slow, and he has a sweet stache.

July 24, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Sgt. Slaughter for sure.

July 24, 2009 at 2:25 PM

What, no one has mentioned Snake Eyes yet?

July 24, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Gotta love Flint and Duke, but Stormshadow and Snake-Eyes were the best!

July 24, 2009 at 2:37 PM

I don’t know squat about G.I Joe (‘cuz I’m a girl), but I think that my husband liked Cobra(?) the best. I’d like to win this for my son.

July 24, 2009 at 3:30 PM

The Baroness of course!

July 24, 2009 at 4:03 PM

I didn’t watch the show closely enough to have a favorite character (I was in my late teens and my younger brother and his friends watched it) , but I had to reply because to this day, whenever anyone says “so now you know”, I have to reply “and knowing is half the battle.” It makes me smile and when I saw the headline I thought about it and was so happy you included it in the article.

July 24, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Yo, Joe! Tristan would enjoy some G.I. Joe DVDs.

July 24, 2009 at 4:37 PM

It has to be Cobra Commander

July 25, 2009 at 12:22 AM

I assume this is different from my Rhino set.

Fans would have revolted if the commercial bumpers had been left out. It’s just not the same.

From the comics, Snake-Eyes is easily my favorite character, but he’s barely developed in the cartoon. From the show, Beach Head was awesome.

July 25, 2009 at 1:04 AM

The Baroness was my favorite character.

July 25, 2009 at 3:14 AM

Snake Eyes was my favorite of the original characters. I remember playing with a Snake Eyes figurine and a “frogman” in church. I must have been 8 or 9. I was also a fan of Zartan. I liked the 3-wheelers.

Snake Eyes was by far the coolest character. And Scarlet was pretty awesome too. I never missed GI Joe or Transformers when I was a kid. GI Joe was previously released on DVD. I have the first two mini-series on DVD from Rhino Video. Shout!Factory must have picked up the license to re-release them. Thanks for the fun give-away.
