TV on DVD for August 18th

Things were a little slow on the DVD front last week, but business has certainly picked back up. The big shows are back with sets from Dexter, Greek, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl, iCarly, and Sons of Anarchy. We also have some classic TV (Simon & Simon), some Discovery favorites (Man vs Wild, Ghost Adventures), and animation (Total Drama Island, The Simpsons, The Smurfs). It all makes for a pretty solid collection. My pick of the week, Simon & Simon. It’s Rick and A.J. man! Pictures, links, and the rest of the releases, after the jump.

dexter3081809 Dexter: The 3rd Season (Blu-ray)

Honestly, I’m still a little bitter about the recent success of Showtime. I was a huge Showtime fan years ago, when they were running Beggars & Choosers, Going To California, and The Chris Isaac Show. Unfortunately, at that time, HBO got all the press. Despite being great shows, they all were largely ignored. The tables have turned in recent years, and Showtime is finding much more success. Leading that charge is Dexter, and Season 3 is exceptional. Bringing Jimmy Smits in to play Miguel was a bit of casting genius. Just his interaction with Dexter is enough to make this a season worth seeing.

Greek: Chapter 3

It’s not the ratings darling that Secret Life is, but Greek is still easily my favorite of the offerings from ABC Family. And really, one of my favorite shows on cable. With the exception of the iffy Andy storyline, Chapter 3 came together rather well. The cast of characters has really developed nicely. This season, I especially enjoyed the changes in the relationships between Casey & Rebecca and Cappie & Evan. Plus, there’s always the chance that Charisma Carpenter will pop up again, which is reason enough to watch all on its own.

This one goes down as one of those pleasant surfing surprises. My Cartoon Network viewing is largely relegated to [adult swim]. I just don’t find myself with time to try and keep up with all of their other offerings. Then one day I stumbled on Total Drama Island, and it’s just crazy. It’s a hilarious sendup of all things reality TV.

Simon & Simon: Season 3

If there is one thing missing from TV today, it’s a classic P.I. series. We certainly have more than our required daily allowance of crimetime, but there’s really nothing in the same vein as the classics like Simon & Simon or Magnum. There are cases being solved, but there is also time to have a few laughs. They do occasionally border on the corny, but you always come out ahead in the end. I suppose Castle is about the closest thing we have right now, but it’s still not the same. I’m looking forward to the forthcoming revival, because it has to happen, right?

Umm… aren’t they still burning of episodes of DSM? Did they really release the DVD before it officially finished airing?

I guess they did finish. I didn’t realize that last episode was the final episode. Talk about going out with a whimper…

Yeah, I still don’t understand what ABC did with DSM, Eli Stone, or Pushing Daisies. If the best they could do was late Saturday night, why even bother? Almost seems like it would have been worth it to the studio to refund the license fee to have unaired episodes on the DVD sets.
