The events that kicked off the season continue to pay dividends on Medium. Does anyone, other than Allison, really trust her powers at this point? Sure, “Baby Fever” once again had things working out in the end, but the road to get there had to give you pause. Knocking on doors at all hours of the night is one thing. Spraying a mother in the face with mace, and kidnapping her child? An entirely different thing. The new twist on Allison’s abilities is at once fascinating, and frightening.
That really was the best part of the episode for me. Allison was so far out of her tree that I even started to question whether or not she had been possessed. Those were just not the actions of a sane woman. When Joe started in, telling her that she has to leave that family alone, I was almost ready for him to handcuff Allison to the bed. And I’m not entirely sure he would have been in the wrong.
She did get away with it this time, but it really is a scary proposition. What if, for example, the baby was in danger from the mother? Something like Münchausen by proxy, which they did kind of hint at. All of the protestations in the world about how she just wanted to protect Bryce wouldn’t have gotten her anywhere.
Getting to the case of the week, I liked the end result with the twist that had Allison’s kidnapping thwarting the planned one. My one big issue with the whole thing was in how the original kidnapping was handled. Why was everyone so quick to assume Elizabeth had kidnapped the baby? Doesn’t it make a little sense to ask if perhaps she had also met with foul play? They didn’t give us any real reason to assume otherwise. And an entire SWAT team to check the house of the nanny/housekeeper? It seems they were a little short on evidence of what had actually happened to warrant the reaction. At that point, they didn’t even have one of Allison’s dreams to go on.
Meanwhile, back at the DuBois center for gifted children, it was Marie’s turn to show a little aptitude. That was a fun story, and I’m very curious to see where it is all headed. With so much focus on the abilities of the girls early in the season, I get the feeling that something big is coming for them. Could it be that their powers will have to save Allison at some point? That idea has some real possibilities.
All in all, another very good episode. The changes to Allison’s powers have things so off-kilter that it’s pretty easy to believe anything right now. That’s a very good sign moving forward, because the directions it can go are limitless.
If only the prerecorded squealing baby didn’t play in a continuous loop, I would have enjoyed the episode much more.
The two little girls who play Marie are frakkin gorgeous.
This season seems disjointed and crazy, which I guess makes sense in light of Allison’s condition. But if I haven’t given up on her now, I’m not going anywhere!
the sixth sense red herring with the dead sister was great. i liked how allison didn’t seem to have any control over what she was doing… the power of her gift compels her!
i thought the marie story was really sweet.
