Community – No, seriously. What does Jeff see in Britta?

community 1x06

Okay, you wonderful commenters helped me determine that last week’s episode of Community was, in fact, out of order. So I was willing to disregard Britta’s bizarre bitchiness toward Jeff as just interrupted storytelling. However, the more we see of Britta, the more I’m confused as to what Jeff sees in her; she’s really annoying.

Last week, it was a whole bunch of, “I can’t believe you’re trying to be my friend as well as being sexually attracted to me; that’s gross,” which was confusing, and this week it’s just, “I’m going to be completely tone-deaf and not understand social cues in any way.” Even Abed would have looked at her bathroom rant about the evils of day spas and been like, “Dude. You should probably dial it back a bit. You’re being weird.”

Britta routinely mocks Jeff for being attracted to her, makes fun of the things her friends enjoy, and is just generally difficult to be around. I understand that the group has this whole weird Breakfast Club thing going on, and that’s why they hang out with her, but it doesn’t explain why Jeff is so head over heels.

I know I talked about it last week, but it’s worth mentioning it again, because as Oprah would say, it was really an “a-ha moment” in the show. Jeff is a good-looking dude. He is also funny and charming. To illustrate this, let’s go to the video of Jeff pointing out, “look how handsome my face is.”

He says that he’s doing all of this because he likes her, but why? Yes, she’s pretty, but as Jeff pointed out, he can get pretty girls. She constantly berates him for liking her, doesn’t seem to have a sense of humor, and is just generally prickly. What does she bring to the table?

Community is one of my favorite new comedies, but I’m getting really tired of this whole Britta thing. Every other character has something to offer, and they all make me laugh. Britta though, is consistently proving to be little more than a downer for everyone– both on the show, and for the people at home.

I don’t really get it either– I would greatly prefer that they just drop this storyline and focus on the other interactions. At least Shirley has the magical effect that makes Britta tolerable when they’re interacting. [I don’t count Britta’s first attempt at the group bathroom trip– cuz wow.]

Um, I’m sorry, but is this post about last week’s ep or this week’s ep because all I read here is about how annoying Britta is.

In this week’s “Football, Feminism and You”, the show dig deeper into Britta’s personality and soften her a bit by the way of “bathroom companion” like why she takes such firm feminist stand and about how girls don’t like her, which might be why she’s so hard on others to protect herself.

I also love the whole racism debacle by making the school’s mascot into some non-racial creepy humanoid thing, Annie and Jeff’s exchange about their selfish selves, and Troy’s acceptance of where he’s at and play football for the fun of it. Overall, one of my favorite ep so far.

The creepy mascot was a joy.

This anti-Britta rant also shines with a little too much Jeff love. What should she be seeing in him? Calling him a selfish prick would be going easy on him. Whatever they are, the characters will evolve as viewers get to know them.

It’s not so much that it’s Jeff love, (although Joel McHale is very hot). I love every character more than Britta, because every other character has made me laugh. She’s really the weak link for me, beacause she’s just so humorless and dour. That’s why I don’t really see what Jeff sees in her.

I think the writers at Community agree with you and they are going away from this story line in the next few episodes — Jeff is going to find a new love.

People always want what they can’t have. Jeff can get any girl (so he says) except Britta, which is why he wants her.

I actually have to agree with you and thank you for bringing it up. I think Jeff’s supposed to like her because she’s the ‘pretty’, ‘normal’ girl who doesn’t fall for his lines, but because she’s so normal, and only has the pretty going for her, I just wish they’d get rid of her. Glee actually has a female love interest who fits in with the lead character and the rest of the cast because she’s actually quirky. I’m about to go on one of my many rants, but I sometimes wish writers weren’t afraid of making the female love interest more than that and giving her a personality to match the rest of the cast.

I don’t think she’s been presented as normal, or as all that pretty either. Dr. Duncan’s also been chasing her for purely physical reasons, but then he also gets along well with Jeff.

We can see by the cracking of her armor this week and the last that she’s just as screwed up as the rest of them, along with self-sabotaging tendencies similar to Troy’s. She may not be quirky-funny like the others, but she’s hardly boring.

And I loved the “I am a female pleasure unit. I require a new coat of paint.” and her complete lack of self-awareness in the women’s room bonding scene.

I think it’s because she’s hot and in his vicinity so he wants to nail her. Personality doesn’t matter all that much. It’s jerk guy logic.

Sigh.

Does the actress that plays Britta have a fake eye? Every now and again her right eye looks straight while her left eye follows whoever she is talking to. It’s kind of creepy.

This “What does Jeff see in Britta? thing amazes me…he is an accomplished lady killer who is obviously turned on to an intelligent, beautiful woman who can see thru his usual BS but still likes and is attracted to him…I love it and hope they not only keep her but get them together eventually.

I love Britta. Furthermore, check this out:

britta-sucks camp: poster (female), Tasha (female), poster (female), Community NBC (marketing), An (female), Jennifer (female)

britta-has-a-fake-eye: Jeff (male)

britta-is-cool: tvjunkie (unknown), GL (unknown), RT (unknown), Ryan (male), Dan (male), Donnie (male)

Do you see a pattern here?

Plus, the names, writing, and other clues in the posts give me reason to believe that most or all of the posters of unknown gender are male.
