The Middle – Brick sure gets my vote for school historian

- Season 1, Episode 13 - "The Interview"

Hell, Brick would get my vote for whatever he chose to run for. Internalize that, Sue, and embrace reality … Brick is awesome and no poster, or speech, is going to change how you stack up against his dominance.

Except for maybe Brick’s handmade campaign poster, which was probably the greatest poster in the history of politics, or the world. It pains me not to be able to share a picture of the exact poster with you here, but so goes the mysteries of television and the Internet. The above photo should give you a rough idea, and suffice it to say, it was a beautiful stick figure. Feel that political message.

Until his speech — which was awesome, by the way — I wasn’t quite sure what it was that Brick was actually running for. It sounds like something closer to school photographer, but I guess “historian” is a classier, and more authoritative title. It’s a cute idea, documenting the school lives of students so that the years spent being educated don’t go by like so much water down a drain. Although it might have been smarter not to make a second grader the school historian, because he’s going to find it tough trying to tell older kids to freeze for a picture. I see a lot more locker stuffings in Brick’s future.

I was on the fence about whether or not Sue got any better for me last night. She definitely got me riled up taking swings at Brick like that after he won the election. Just because she’s a sad sack doesn’t mean Brick needs to be, even if he is nerdier than she is. I’m not sure how down I am with Sue anymore.

Axl still remains very much a blank slate. Yes we see a lot of him (both figuratively and literally), but I get the feeling that his purpose might be to bring Mike kicking and screaming into this century. Or in general to help Mike evolve into a more complete person.

He’s also been known to provide Brick with a great partner, be it when Brick’s looking for a buddy or for some advice about the ladies. Which is great, definitely no complaints from me on that front. I’m just saying that I’ve yet to determine whether Axl’s meant to play a role beyond that of support, which he does so well. That and exhibitionist, of course.

I know it was just a tool for introducing the dinosaur bone story line, but I like how last night’s episode incorporated “How was your day?” during commercial breaks, last seen as the family awkwardly sat around the table for dinner. And the stuff they came up with for each character! Frankie and her purse full of donuts (“There were a lot of red lights on the way home.”), Sue discovering that chess is nothing like checkers (um, you think?), and Brick “finally” sneezing an eraser out of his nose … each took about three seconds to say, but were perfect fits for the characters, and could have been plots of their own on another episode.

Of course last night was about Mike’s dinosaur bone, and how it led him to say the following thing on an interview: “I guess what I’m really saying is, septic waste is my passion.”

Hey, who hasn’t felt that way at some point in their life? (ME!)
