Greek returned tonight from semester break with part two of its third season, and I think we all know what that means….
No, I’m not talking about more parties and new couples. I’m still stuck on a topic that doesn’t seem to phase many people involved with the show (see my preview) — what happens at the end of this semester when Cappie, Casey, Evan, and Ashleigh graduate? Who will stay, and how will that work? And will it feel as forced as Andrea passing on the Ivys to stay near Brandon and the gang?
Unfortunately, tonight’s episode did not feed my need for information. But it actually managed to do one better … can you say Team Kettlewell?
That would be Todd and Tim, Dale’s new interns. That’s right … like Cosmo Kramer before him, Dale managed to hoodwink a couple of bright-eyed kids into jumping on his shooting star. Will they stay now that Rusty was victorious? Who knows, but it’s awesome to have Daley back. Let’s hope he sticks around this time (and that he shares other tidbits from Cappie’s Christmas newsletter).
I suppose we should discuss some of the drama that’ll dominate the show this season. The sisters of ZBZ seem to not be taking the Gamma Psi fire very well. I don’t think burying Katherine’s clipboard was the smartest idea, or the solution, but sticking together as sisters will help. You hear that Rebecca?
I wasn’t sure why Casey felt she couldn’t share the secret with Cappie. It fueled an inauthentic tension between them, which inevitably led Casey to question Cappie when he hadn’t done anything wrong. Ashleigh’s new hatred of men played a part in that, but it was Casey who really pushed Cappie away for no reason.
Not that he did her any better by not sharing his feelings about Wade, Ferret, and Jeremy getting expelled. Cappie has always been a well-rounded character, with the ability to share and emote. I found it very unlike him to keep that bottled up inside, away from both Rusty and Casey. Or at least Dale. And the result was his complete lack of perspective, at least as far as Wade was concerned. Actually, I kind of expected him to take some action. Where was that Cappie hiding?
I loved Rusty’s entire plot tonight, and I think his taking over as pledge educator will be great for his character, since he scores when he’s either with Dale, Calvin, or the KTs. Hopefully the job will suck him into the house more, and it’s bound to end up in a lot more hilarity, since Rusty’s Rusty, and the pledges won’t respect him for long. Who could respect The Impaler? Not like Beaver The Enforcer, or Dale The Drill Sergeant.
I’m disappointed that Evan seems to be ensnared by Rebecca now. After he and Frannie broke up I was finally enjoying him, and I even liked Evan and Rebecca as pals. This new thing is not for me, and it will only feed his distance from Cappie. And Evan’s friendship with Calvin is too marginal to keep him enjoyable on its own.
Speaking of Calvin, I was extremely happy that he ended things with Grant. What a terrible match for him. Of course that was until they got back together. And now it’ll just get worse; does Grant really expect immediate acceptance? Are Calvin and Grant about to turn into a PSA?
Hopefully Calvin will catch wind of the fact that Heath’s back, and he’ll reconsider getting together with him. And on a side note, can Heath seriously still go to med school after tanking his finals so that he couldn’t graduate?
So much to cover yet this season. I’m looking forward, because if tonight’s any indication, things are going to get really good.
I love the Calvin and Grant thing, them dancing together was so cute!

I don’t know … Calvin seems unable to find someone who plays as equal partner with him. Either he has someone dragging him along and telling him he’s not gay enough, or he’s coddling someone who’s still coming to terms with it himself. And Grant’s just not a nice guy. I still say Heath is the right move for him.
I agree, but the dancing was still so nice.
However grant’s look on his face at the end of the episode lead me to thinking he will burn the house down… oh the writers already did that plot point. :)
before i read the rest of the review… who the hell is Andrea, Brandon, & the gang?

Really? 90210, the original?
ah. never seen it, but plan to watch it over the summer through netflix instant watch
i think you have your answer about the seniors in this ep. they brought back Heath so they can pretty much do that to anyone. they could always bring them back & say “damn i was 1 credit short.”
i’m with you on the Calvin/Heath thing. they were a better couple & Grant is just super naive if he didn’t think he’d get flack for coming out.
oh yeah, i don’t think Rebecca will out the ZBZs for the fire. she is born to be a lying politician. i don’t mind if her & Evan get together either, as long as he stays the same as he is now.

I guess they can do it easily, I just hope it’s done well. Like, I’d love to see Cappie spend this season both frightened at the prospect of graduating and also interested in something new that will carry him to grad school … at CRU. Casey I’d actually like to see working in the Greek system post-grad … at CRU. And Evan I can see needing to go to law school at CRU for money reasons. Whatever it is, I just hope it isn’t “oh, I needed one more credit so I’m back!” for all of them. :)
But how many people go to grad school at the same school? lol
Plus we need another season, the show is very close to being canceled with last chapter’s horrid ratings. So hopefully the htree hour block really helped them, couldn’t get any worse… right…. right?

Definitely true. I guess I just really wonder what the plan was on day 1 for this situation. Was the intention to follow these characters as far as they’d go, or is it more about the institutions, in which case graduating seniors can be replaced by incoming freshmen? And then, how has their day 1 plan changed seeing how fan favorite people like Casey and Cappie are.
I know the show has a very small audience, but I’ve never heard rumors about it being close to getting the ax. Brett could speak to that a lot better than I could, but while I know they don’t yet have an order for next season, I’ve never heard that they spent each hiatus hanging by a thread. I don’t know.
EW has been talking about how bad the ratings were and that ABC Family wasn’t going to comment about it being canceled or not until after the season/chapter started.

I didn’t even realize that that was a real concern. The way I saw it, they served their demographic well, even if their viewership was low. I guess we’ll see what happens this half-season.
Me too i really don’t want to see Evan with Rebecca. I like Rebecca and can see her as a really good friend for Evan but not as a girlfriend, it’s too contrived (the bad guy with the bad girl crap) and will be quickly boring.
The characters for a good on-screen love-story have to be different and similar in the same time, to make the story entertaining they have to have interesting angst.
I see a stubborn, tomboy girl for him, to complete him and make funny interactions. I saw him with girlie girls (Frannie puke !), Casey for me was more and less his match, hey she is more tomboy than the other girls on this show at least (but the show wants her with Cappie and i love Cappie so i am ok with that lol) and it is not the type of girl for a funny, complex dynamic with him. I love Evan and i want him with a girl who can his perfect match. Moreover Evan and Rebecca have a good little chemistry but it is not the killer chemistry for a IT tv couple.

I think they were great together for that little window of time last half-season when she was paying his way, or whatever. Like you I can see them as friends, assuming Rebecca’s acting like she did back during that brief interlude. But dating, or doing anything with Rebecca in her current state? No way.
