Glee – Relationships take a tumble

It seems that every relationship on the show died a little this week, except for Tina and Artie (Or, you know, Brittany and Santana, but that’s a whole other story).

- Season 1, Episode 17 - "Bad Reputation"

During the first half of Glee’s first season, the show slowly created several potential relationships that finally paid off in the midseason finale. Will and Emma ended up together, Rachel and Finn were on their way … We even had some hope for couples like Artie and Tina, and even Puck and Quinn. Unfortunately, what Ryan Murphy built, he didn’t need anyone else to tear asunder, he did it himself. It seems that every relationship on the show died a little this week, except for Tina and Artie (Or, you know, Brittany and Santana, but that’s a whole other story).

We haven’t seen much of Emma Pillsbury in the second half of this season, a problem that was definitely rectified this week. She certainly slipped right in the cliché of the woman scorned, but rightfully so. While offscreen, Emma has apparently been working hard to be able to be in a more normal relationship with Will, only to find out about his dalliances with the good, and not so good, witches of Wicked, or more appropriately their Glee counterparts Shelby and April. Will has got some ‘splaining to do, and I don’t think Emma should think about taking him back anytime soon. Where does that leave our lovelorn lead? I predict the return of his wife.

Rachel is in a similar position, minus the whole making out and sleeping over thing. She used all three of her men to get something, only to discover it wasn’t what she wanted. There’s a difference between popularity and notoriety, and she hasn’t learned that particular lesson yet. She has, however, learned how not to make a music video with three separate love interests. The lesson cost her, at least temporarily, her new beau Jesse. I doubt they’ll be apart long, as Jesse kinda loses his purpose on the show without Rachel.

Each week, I end up with more quotes in the Notes & Quotes section for Glee than for any other show I cover, and I always pare it down. This week, with all of the Sue and Brittany brilliance, I’ve decided to share everything I jotted down. I even have the Glist for your review!

Notes & Quotes:

  • “And as soon as I figure out the difference between slander and libel I’m filing a law suit!” – Sue
  • “Your glee club is a petri dish of sexual depravity.” – Sue
  • “[Mocking Figgins] He cannot have these shenanigans at this school!!!” – Sue
  • “OK enough! No one is accusing anybody of anything … Puck, seriously, did you do it??” – Will
  • “Maybe if we seem more dangerous people will stop flushing my glasses down the toilet.” – Artie
  • Sometimes (OK, most of the time) you have to feel crappy for Artie, who gets left while everyone else dances like crazy.
  • So, this is going to be one of those weeks where Quinn is pregnant, eh?
  • “This is not happening.  The cruel slow motion laughter is just your imagination.” – Sue
  • “Wait … What’s that smell? Dear God, it’s coffee. It’s usually masked by the smell of fear.” – Sue
  • “I’m going to stop you. You had me at sex tape.” — Artie
  • “Hold your hat, because Rachel Berry is about to become … Musically Promiscuous.” – Rachel
  • “I’ve been here since first period. I have a cold, and I took all my antibiotics at the same time and now I can’t remember how to leave. But I also don’t know why I only made fourth on the Glist. I made out with like everyone at this school. Girls. Boys. Mr. Kiney the janitor. I need to do something to get in the top three.” — Brittany
  • “What’s the worst thing we can do in this school?” – Kurt
“Eat in the cafeteria?” – Tina
  • “You nearly married a gym teacher who’s more gravy than man.” – Sue
  • “I’m ironically turned on by your bad boy image, but I think we should just keep this professional.” – Rachel
  • “No, can’t go in the teacher’s lounge. Lots of cruel slow motion laughter going on in there.” – Sue
  • “Don’t start with me, Castle. I will kick you square in the taco.” – Sue
“It’s a date. That’s just a typical Saturday night in the Castle condo.” – Brenda
  • “I’m kinda getting cold feet here.” – Artie
“Can you even feel your feet.?” – Brittany
  • Only Kurt would think that reenacting the “U Can’t Touch This” music video in the library would get them some movement on the sexually based Glist.
  • Love that a kid from the Buy More is also in the McKinley High A/V Club.
  • So, was Puck actually being a good guy by moving the Glist off of Rachel’s locker?
  • “I don’t know how to turn on a computer.” – Brittany
  • “We have to do what we’ve been dreading, something more terrifying that Rachel’s personality.” – Artie
  • “You’re a really good teacher, even if everyone’s calling you a manwhore.” – Quinn
  • “You’re a go for Sue.” – Sue
“Hello, Sue? It’s Olivia Newton-John. The star of Grease? The most successful movie musical of all time?” – Olivia Newton-John
“Nice try, and that’s a ridiculous accent!” – Sue
  • I was not a big fan of the “Run, Joey, Run” video, except for the cameo by everyone’s favorite drug pusher, Sandy Ryerson.
  • Jean and Sue scenes are generally the best in any given episode they are a part of … just sayin’.

The Glist

2.)   Santana +43
3.)   Puck +38
4.)   Brittany +35
5.)   Jesse +29

Is it just me Ivey, or are they starting to overuse the Big Rachel Numbers? During “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, I found my self bored with Rachel’s pained and crinkly expression she always has, when belting out these sorts of tunes. Don’t get me wrong. The girl is wicked talented. Maybe it was something I ate.

OK, for one I actually like the pained and crinkly expressions :)

That being said, starting to overuse? If you ask me, Glee is being weighed down by the incredibly high number of Rachel/Finn duets, a problem for a while now.

And once again, by having the big group number go right to the last second of the show, they get screwed by American Idol. I lost the last line of the song on my TiVo. And no, I can’t set it to go longer, because I’m recording “Lost” simultaneously, and “Parenthood” and “V” afterward. The “Glee” producers should sue Fox, or “AI”, for doing damage to their show every week by running over.

And if they have to put the auto-tune on “12” for Jane Lynch, she should stop singing. Olivia Newton-John sounded pretty good, like a human singer. Lynch was all computer, and it sounded horrible.

There’s too much Sue these days. She’s like horseradish–good as a flavor, but no one eats a meal of it.
