Diary of a Blood Ties Virgin – Windigos, Medusas and blow jobs

Despite the sometimes ridiculous inconsistencies and the lack of original story lines, I'm still enjoying 'Blood Ties.' I'm hoping the series lasted long enough for some of the deeper stuff to be followed up on.

Season 1, Episodes 7 – 9

“Heart of Ice”

When I saw that the monster of the week was a windigo, I immediately thought back to one of the first episodes of Supernatural. Although a very different story line, is a windigo really that popular?

But then this episode wasn’t so much about the windigo (but I liked that they had Mike kill it with silver bullets … the guy’s got to be a true believer at this point, right?) as it was about Mike being a jealous moron, which led him to fall for Javier’s story and ultimately resulted in the capture of Henry. Really Mike?

I find Henry’s reasoning for feeding / not feeding interesting. I get it when he says that he’s choosing to live when he feeds, but then he refused to feed off Vicki to save his life … just because he was mad at her about the Mike thing? Really Henry, get over it and get your strength back. And take off that bathrobe — you look like a dork.

Coreen, on the other hand, just ascended several steps up the cool ladder. She just happened to have a flamethrower and knew what type of gun Mike carried … she’s more than a source for supernatural information.

“Heart of Fire”

OK, so Mike’s a stand-up guy and he sees the err of his ways and he’s going to make things right. That’s all well and good, but I’m starting to notice inconsistencies about the way sucking people’s blood is handled. In this episode, it was like one little bite was a sudden death sentence, where in the earlier episodes, Henry sucked random women and Vicki with no ill effects for them. He sucks Mike for like a second and he almost dies? Then he sucks the girl in the flashback and has to change her so she won’t die? Which is it?

We did learn a bit more about the lore though — crosses don’t seem to effect Henry (shown in the flashbacks which were awesome and reminiscent of the Angel flashbacks), but the sun sure fried Delphine quickly and thoroughly.

Now Vicki has the illumination del sol and the key … I’m wondering why she didn’t destroy it. Do you think she saw a side of Henry that she didn’t like and wants the means to control him if she should need to? I hope this comes up again in later episodes.

“Stone Cold”

“Whatever happened to beauty before age?” – young, female night club patron
“Age stomped beauty’s ass.” – Vicki

“In the turns-to-stone department, I’m thinking a basilisk or a gorgon.” – Coreen
“Great. One’s an herb, the other’s a cheese.” – Vicki

I’m just not sure I’m all that into the Mike and Vicki relationship tension. I really don’t care if they are together or not — is that wrong? It can’t be, because there was so much awesomeness in this episode that I couldn’t be bothered with the Mike-Vicki sniping (but I’ll admit their touching talk about people falling in love with the wrong person was good).

For instance, let that be a lesson to you, boys — a lesson called, “Why You Should Never Beg for Blow Jobs.” Then, when Medusa turns him into stone mid-BJ, you don’t wonder for long why they never again show the statue below the waist. You do have to wonder why no one mentioned the giant hard-on that the statue almost definitely had, though. That’s some funny stuff.

Other things:

  • Henry gets carded at the night club.
  • Mike’s haircut is weird … he needs sideburns.
  • Coreen hacked an FBI facial recognition software program … she just gets more awesome.

Only three more episodes to go until season one ends and season two is oh-so-short….

This series was adapted for television under the title Blood Ties and aired on the Lifetime channel in the US.

1. Blood Price (1991)
2. Blood Trail (1992)
3. Blood Lines (1992)
4. Blood Pact (1993)
5. Blood Debt (1997)
6. Blood Bank – a short story collection

All the books that Blood Ties was based on came out before Supernatural, and Buffy, and Angel, and True Blood, and the Vampire Diaries and last but not least Twilight and it’s associated movies.

Mike was most likely anemic and remember Henry has the ability to move quickly so did he REALLY only suck that girl’s blood for a second? Hmmmm?

Coreen was always awesome and her hairdos were one of the things, other than Henry, that I tuned in to see every week. The one thing about this show is that it NEVER took itself seriously.

And one of those bathrobes, as you call it, went for $305 on EBAY. I believe there were two.

Maybe the fans looked past some of the things that might seem obvious to others because we were so in love with the way the actors portrayed the characters and the fantastic snarky lines they got to deliver each week.

This show continues to garner new fans from word of mouth from the older fans to the newer generation of fans. The original fans of the show continue to miss the show and we’re praying that the Smoke and Mirrors TV series that has been proposed will be able to get the financing they need so we can see Henry again. The show and Henry (Kyle Schmid) are still missed, even though a couple of years has passed.

I compare Henry’s usual feeding to relishing a fine glass of wine in small sips – not only for Henry, by watching Vicki’s response to it in ‘Blood Price’.
When Henry fed from Mike in ‘Heart of Fire’ he was tortured and starved to no end and used too much force. No inconsistencies – at least in my view.
The next appearance of the ‘eight star thingy’ will get …interesting… (don’t like to spoil) ;o)
