Glee – Mr. Shu against the music

The glee club wants to perform Britney Spears music but Mr. Shu thinks she's not the best role model. Some nitrous oxide-fueled fantasies proves him wrong.

- Season 2, Episode 2 - "Britney/Brittany"

I haven’t been a huge fan of Glee‘s themed episodes thus far. The Madonna and Lady Gaga episodes had too little plot and seemed an excuse just to put the cast into some lavishly produced music videos. I was apprehensive about the Britney Spears episode, but it turned out to have some great character development, terrific writing and excellent, lavishly produced music videos. And of course, the big bombshell of the night was the revelation of Brittany’s full name: Brittany S. Pierce!

No big Sue moments this week, or Coach Beiste, but the other characters found their own new directions after a visit to the hunky new dentist, Carl, who also happens to be Emma’s new boyfriend. And let’s give a big warm Glee welcome to John Stamos. Will Carl and Will have a season long battle over Emma or is Carl’s time on the show short-lived? I was relieved to see Will’s ex for only one brief scene, but her appearance didn’t really do much plotwise except scare Emma off.

We had some debate here last week about Rachel’s awful behavior towards not only new girl Sunshine, but the rest of the glee club as well. This week, thanks to the power of Britney Spears, she’s finally learned to lighten up a bit on herself and her relationship with Finn. As I pointed out, the writers seem to have a knack for giving those with the worst behavior some redeeming qualities and in the space of a week, they’ve made Rachel almost likable again. Almost everyone had a good moment this week, except for poor Mercedes. Why is she fading into the background? And Kurt was just being a petulant brat over the Britney ban, but next week looks to be full of some heavy drama for him. This episode was light and fluffy for the most part, but featured some great musical performances and it was nice to see Brittany finally get her chance in the spotlight. And let’s not forget the cameos by the real Britney.  She came off as pretty grounded.  Good job!

The episode also had some choice quotes:

“Who can tell me who Christopher Cross is?” – Will
“He discovered America.” – Brittany

“How can you get caught between the moon and New York City? They’re like a hundred miles apart.” – Finn after reading the lyrics to Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)

“I don’t brush my teeth. I rinse my mouth out with soda after I eat. I was pretty sure Dr. Pepper was a dentist.” – Brittany after chewing a plaque tablet that turned her teeth blue

“I look forward to the day the paparazzi provokes me and I attack them.” – Rachel after reading Britney Spears’ unauthorized biography

“Students who ate the ravioli today and are not up on their tetanus shots should see the nurse immediately.” – Principal Figgins at assembly

“”It’s a Britney Spears sex riot!” – Sue before pulling the fire alarm to disperse the hormonally raging students during the “Toxic” performance

Sorry for the typo on the quote “How can you get caught between the moon and New York City? They’re like a hundred miles apart.” – Finn after readying the lyrics to Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do).

Should be “reading the lyrics.”
