Let’s face it, this was the way the Yin story line had to end for Psych to remain Psych. Had Yin been Shawn’s evil twin; had Yin been Shaw’s mother or Gus’ dad; the dynamic for the show would likely be drastically altered. The show wouldn’t be able to continue unfazed, with its standalone episodes, if Shawn or Gus are put through something that epic.
So, we find out Yin is Peter Weller … well, played by Peter Weller, a psychotic near-neighbor to the Spencer family home. I knew the moment I heard Yin’s voice this time who the actor was, mostly because I’d been watching Dexter for the past bunch of weeks, and Weller played Liddy there. I’m sure he’s also yet another actor from the Psych writers’ wish list of guest stars, seeing as he’s another callback to the ’80s with RoboCop and Buckaroo Banzai.
Even with all of that in mind, though, I can’t say I’m not a bit disappointed. I can’t say the finale wasn’t good or that I don’t still love the show. It’s more that I felt the Yin story could have been more epic given the buildup it’s had over the past few seasons, and it just wasn’t. It just … ended. The reason for Yin’s killing was weird and flimsy, though I guess that can be chalked up to him being a lunatic is all. But didn’t you want the Yin story to be more than this? I did.
I think back to when I interviewed some of the cast at Comic-Con this year, and then at the strange lack of big promotion for the finale. I recall that James Roday didn’t seem to want to make a big deal about the Yin story, which I thought odd. Now it seems to all make sense, since there really wasn’t a big deal to be made about it at all. Maybe they knew there was a ton of speculation going on and wanted to fan those flames a bit by talking it down? Or maybe they read some theories going around out there and, with their story already set in stone, wished they’d gone another route? I doubt the latter, but I wonder about the former.
We came out of this episode with two significant things, other than the end to the Yin-Yang story. One is obviously Alison, who I’d say is a sure bet to return sometime in the future. I’m not sure if that means we’d be onto yet another trilogy of sorts, though. The other is Lassiter seeing Shawn and Juliette smooch in the interrogation room. I’m not sure yet what that’s going to mean for next season, though since Shawn and Juliette’s relationship wasn’t exactly a huge point of this season to begin with, it will probably just make for some funny/fun stuff to look forward to.
Since I seem to like polls so much with this show, let’s put it up to a vote. Did you like the resolution to the Yin story or not? See you next season!
Definitely not a big deal with the conclusion…I honestly don’t even remember now why he was killing. Talk about low impact!
I thought Lassiter looked downright scary when he saw Shawn and Juliet kiss. He didn’t look like he was going to have a snappy comeback. It would be cool if he were to go dark.
