30 Rock takes a pass on Valentine’s Day

'30 Rock's' tradition of brutal Valentine's Days continued this week as Liz and Carol's relationship was tested, along with Jack and Avery's. Would either relationship survive?

- Season 5, Episode 14 - "Double-Edged Sword"

I think this is why I love 30 Rock so much. While the rest of the universe was giving us lovey-dovey Valentine’s Day episodes this week, 30 Rock went against type and delivered a great episode, as it usually does on Valentine’s Day. There were no contrived plots, with couples realizing how much they love each other. Instead, Liz and Carol’s relationship went down in flames, ending at gunpoint.

I was a little surprised at how much I liked Matt Damon as Carol, the pilot, through his run on 30 Rock. As with all of Liz’s ex-boyfriends, I’m sure we’re going to see him pop up again from time to time. Plus, Jack and Avery look to have some staying power and the show just couldn’t work with both Liz and Jack happily married off.

As we saw in this episode, though, not everything is rainbows and sunshine in Jack’s marriage. This whole episode explored the double-edged sword that is dating someone just like you. Both Jack and Avery, and Carol and Liz fell into the trap of feeding into each other’s flaws. Luckily, Jack was able to reverse course and “quit,” unlike Liz.

I was a little disappointed to see Tracy’s EGOT storyline wrapped up so quickly. The writers have been drawing it out for so long, it was way to abrupt to end so nonchalantly, though I did love Tracy’s Oscar speech (“Pop Tarts!”). It seems like it was the best options for the writers, knowing that Tracy Morgan was going to need some time off to recover from his kidney transplant. All the same, I was a little bummed.

There were a ton of great quotes tonight, between Jack and Avery attacking everything Canadian and Tracy having his breakdown. Here are just a few of my favorites:

“Steven Spielberg wants you to star in his next movie.” -Kenneth
“Kate Capshaw’s husband?!?” – Tracy

“Yes, my daughter is Canadian-American, but I’m going to treat her just like a  human baby.” – Jack, on his daughter being born in Canada

“Look, Liz, we have reasons for doing the things the way that we do them, we say half an hour to control the herds walking mozzarella sticks who think that 300 dollars and a photo ID gives them the right to fly through the air like on of the guardian owls of legend. God, that’s been our in flight movie for months.” – Carol, on always telling passengers that they are a half hour from take off
