American Idol – Hey! It’s the girls!

So ... did the girls out-perform the guys from the night before? Not in this reviewer's opinion. There was some horrific performances ... but ... there was one contestant who won me over ...

- Season 10, Episode 15 - "The Top 12 Girls Perform"

And, now, we’re off and running on American Idol

That was an awful big stage the Top 12 girls tried … hey … waitaminnit! I said the same thing in yesterday’s post! Enough with the shenanigans! Let’s see if the girls stacked up against the guys from the night before …

Right off the bat, I’m asking myself “What the hell is this?” as Ta-Tynisa Wilson murders her tune to start off the show.  Seriously: She made it into the Top 24 with that schlock? You think she’s headed off the Idol stage for good after that? Yup. She is. I agree.

Naima Adedapo (“Summertime”): Head and shoulders above Ta-Tynisa. Interesting she picked a Gershwin tune. She took a chance and it seemed to pay off, regardless of its loungey-ness.

Kendra Chantelle (“Impossible”): Nice to see there was control coming out of Kendra’s voice, but she dialed it back a bit too much. She could have thrown it out out there and “wow’d” us, but she did wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination.

Rachel Zevita (“Criminal”)”: Did they put a deadener on Rachel’s voice backstage before she came on to perform? Because that’s what it sounded like. She was muffled and thick. And when Randy put his honest opinion out there, her chin crumpled as if she was going to shrivel up. Rachel: A sultry dress and sultry moves just don’t do it. You’ve got to sing

Karen Rodriguez (“Hero”): *hrmph* Well, the only thing positive with Karen’s performance was she didn’t sing it like Mariah Carey. She was off key in parts and practically lifeless in others. So … why didn’t I get goosebumps like JLo did? Okay … to be fair, the performance wasn’t completely lifeless, but it wasn’t anything I want to hear again …

Lauren Turner (“Seven Day Fool”): Well … now we’re talkin’. Finally, someone up there who knows what they’re doing. But … she won’t win, no matter how good she might become. Why? Yep … that tattoo on her left wrist. Here’s the first (and certainly not the last) time I’ll profess: Chicks with tattoos don’t win American Idol.

Ashthon Jones (“Love Over Me”):  She’s got “love all over her” … is that what she sang? No, she didn’t. She did have a tone of craptastickness, however. “You have all the makings of a diva,” JLo said. I think she meant “only in your dreams” …

Julie Zorrilla (“Breakaway”): Is it even wise to attempt a Kelly Clarkson song at this stage of the game? No, it’s not. Julie, Julie, Julie … All you had to do was pick a key … any key … any key that would have worked … Instead, you lost your way from the very start.

Haley Reinhart (“Fallin'”): Finally, a girl who lent some flavor and character to her performance. Quite a bit of mixing it up there, Haley, but well done.

Thia Megia (“Out Here on My Own”): You know, I really didn’t like Thia … but she does have control over her voice. No … she’s got a lot of control over her voice. That, and she can project. Did you hear any of the other gals projecting? I didn’t. And that’s how she won me over. I wasn’t looking to be impressed by her at all, but she put me in my place. What she did took discipline. Did I mention she won me over?

Lauren Alaina (“Turn on the Radio”): There’s only one thing I have to say about Lauren’s performance: Nothing wrong with it in the least.

Pia Toscano (“I’ll Stand By You”): Hmmmmm, what do you know. A performer who has the confidence to just stand there and sing for a change. Not the best effort we’ve heard from her … but good enough to get her through.

Observation: Steven Tyler cracked me up, right leg slung over the arm of his chair at the final performance like a kid who doesn’t care.

Bring on the guillotine and let’s get rid of some of the dead weight …

Lauren Turner was my favorite. Thia my second fave — maybe the nostalgic tune sung simply without force.
Pia just needs to learn what to do with her hands.

Ta-Tynisa’s performance reminded me of an SNL spoof of Whitney Houston.

I think that Karen’s English/Spanish move was bold and brilliant. She just captured a very large audience that way.

Someone should apparently hold Michael up.

Not it!!

Full disclosure. During DVR shuffling last night, I watched Zevita’s performance, and most of Rodriguez’s.

I could tell instantly that Zevita was a much better performer than she showed here. While she tried (and generally succeed in) looking comfortable, you could tell that she wasn’t at her best.

Thia Megia was my favorite. I thought her song choice was brilliant. And she’s so young!!

I had no favorites, as far as the females go, but I completely agree with your write up. Still yet, the girl’s overall did not impress me. About halfway through the performances I thought……DANG, now I’m gonna have to take back what I said about some of the guy’s performances?!? :D

Can’t wait to see your review of the final {10? 12? 13?}. I did like this results show [despite the Seacrust slathered artificial drama], and the lack of “extra” stars didn’t bother me at all.
